Our earlier Mage guides cover the starter basics, Frostfire Bolt, Frost, Arcane and Fire leveling, plus level 60 gearing. This one is about raid night: what every Mage brings, what each spec adds, how to split the jobs when you have several Mages, and what Blizzard's final pre-launch notes changed.
Key dates (Blizzard): the game launched Nov 4, 2026. Barrow Deeps (10 players), Hyjal Summit (20 players) and Onyxia's Lair (40 players) open on Dec 9.
Read this first: the beta stopped at level 30 and had no raids. Blizzard hasn't revealed boss mechanics for Barrow Deeps or Hyjal Summit; for Onyxia it has said to expect powerful fire attacks and to build fire resistance. Numbers below come from Blizzard's Nov 2 notes and from beta client data shown on community sites. Talent builds assume 51 points at 60, which Blizzard hasn't confirmed. Nothing here has been tested at level 60 yet.
What changed on Nov 2 (official)
From Blizzard's "Beta Development Notes – Updated November 2" (posted the evening of Nov 2, Pacific). Blizzard says that apart from bugs and serious outliers, it doesn't plan big tuning changes before the raids open.
- Frost Blast is removed. If you followed our Oct 22 Frost leveling guide, that part is now outdated.
- Precision (renamed from Elemental Precision, Frost tier 1) is back to 3 points for 2, 4 and 6% spell hit with all spells. Arcane Focus is gone and merged into it, so this is now the only talent hit for every spec.
- Frost: Piercing Ice is removed. Ice Barrier now also raises your Frost damage by 15% for 1 minute, plus 5% more while the shield holds. Ice Lance has an 8-second cooldown shared with Fire Blast, and deals 300% more to Frozen targets again. Frost Ward can now fully negate a spell's damage instead of reflecting it. Winter's Chill gives Cone of Cold 20% more damage per stack.
- Fire: Incineration goes to 5 points (10% crit), Improved Fireball is renamed Accelerant and also speeds up Arcane Wrath, Critical Mass goes back to 3 points (6%), Improved Fire Blast moves to row 3, and Ignite now applies to all of Flamestrike's damage.
- Arcane: Arcane Blast's cost grows 100% per stack (was 175%), each stack gives 12% of your Intellect as spell damage (was 15%), and it lasts 18 seconds. Missile Barrage moves to row 2 and is consumed when Arcane Missiles starts; Clearcasting is no longer spent on those Missiles. Arcane Resilience moves to row 1 (up to 75% of Intellect as armor).
- Every class: low-rank spells no longer lose proc chance, except Mage Blizzard: a rank more than 12 levels below yours still procs Arcane Concentration, Frostbite and Fingers of Frost less often. Proc roots like Frostbite now have diminishing returns.
- Races: Troll Berserking lasts 15 seconds, Orc Blood Fury drops to a 2-minute cooldown (and Savage is gone), Human Ruthless drops to 1% crit, Skyborne Wind Blessed is 2% haste, and Dwarf gets 1% hit (not a Mage race in Forever).
- Other classes that matter to you: Paladin Salvation is removed, Bear Form and Defensive Stance generate much more threat, and Moonkin Aura and Leader of the Pack give 3% to every kind of crit again but don't stack with each other.
What every Mage brings
From the spellbook in the beta client data (wowforeverprogress), so every spec has these:
- Arcane Brilliance (level 56): +31 Intellect to the whole raid for 1 hour. It needs Arcane Powder, so stock up. Only one Mage needs to cast it.
- Remove Lesser Curse (level 18): in Forever it removes one Curse or Bane. Expect the raid leader to give you curse duty.
- Counterspell (level 24): locks the target out of that school for 10 seconds, 30-second cooldown. It generates a lot of threat, so let the tank grab caster adds first. Improved Counterspell (Arcane) adds a 4-second silence.
- Polymorph: humanoid crowd control for up to 50 seconds, one target per Mage.
- Conjure Water and Food: 10 of each per cast. Hand them out before the pull.
- Amplify and Dampen Magic: more or less spell damage and healing taken on a party member. Which one helps depends on fights we haven't seen yet.
- Portals at 40 and 50, with Rune of Portals, for getting the raid home.
What you don't bring any more: in Classic, Fire Mages raised the whole raid's Fire damage with Improved Scorch, and Frost Mages gave the raid crit with Winter's Chill. In Forever both are personal. Improved Scorch only boosts your own Fire damage, Winter's Chill only boosts your own Cone of Cold, and Ignite is a separate debuff for each Mage. So you don't need a dedicated "Scorch Mage", and stacking Fire Mages doesn't help each other.
What each spec adds
Frost: the steady one. wowforeverprogress's draft raid build is 20/0/31: Ice Lance, Fingers of Frost, Shatter and now Ice Barrier, which you keep up on its 30-second cooldown for the 15% (plus 5%) Frost damage. Spend a Fingers of Frost proc on Ice Lance when it's off cooldown, then Frostbolt. Frost Channeling cuts Frost threat by 30%, and Ice Block is a free wipe-saver on raid damage. Their draft calls Frost "the simpler, steadier pick" until logs exist.
Fire: the crit one. The draft build is 12/36/3: keep 5 Improved Scorch stacks up yourself, Fire Blast on cooldown for Heating Up stacks, and Pyroblast at 3 stacks. Combustion lines up with Troll Berserking (both 3 minutes). Burning Soul cuts Fire threat by 30%, which matters more with Salvation gone. Onyxia warning: Blizzard says to expect powerful fire attacks there. Whether Onyxia or her whelps resist Fire hasn't been announced, so have a Frost talent build or Frostbolt plan ready, just in case.
Arcane: the mana-bar one. The draft build is 38/10/3: build Arcane Blast stacks (spell damage worth 12% of your Intellect each, 48% at 4 stacks), then Arcane Wrath on cooldown and free Missile Barrage Arcane Missiles inside the 18-second window. Your mana decides how many stacks you can afford, so long fights will be the test. Arcane takes Improved Counterspell, so it's a natural pick for interrupt duty. Arcane Subtlety cuts Arcane threat by 30%.
All three drafts put 3 points into Precision for 6% hit (Fire's alternative 12/39/0 build drops it if your gear covers hit). The boss hit cap isn't confirmed; see our gearing guide.
Splitting jobs with several Mages
Based on the abilities above (our suggestion, not an official rule):
- One Mage on Arcane Brilliance for the raid, with a backup who also carries Arcane Powder.
- Curse duty by group: give each Mage a set of groups or players to decurse, so two people don't cleanse the same curse.
- Interrupt rotation on caster adds, with the Arcane Mage (Improved Counterspell) first. Remember Counterspell's threat.
- Polymorph marks on trash: one target per Mage, called before the pull.
- Water and food before the raid and after wipes: one Mage per side of the room.
- Portal Mage at the end of the night.
- No Scorch Mage needed. Improved Scorch is personal now, so every Fire Mage keeps their own stacks.
Threat without Salvation
There's no Salvation in Forever any more, and Mages have no threat drop. Tanks do generate a lot more threat now (Bear Form 115%, Defensive Stance 80%), but Ice Barrier's damage bonus, Combustion and Arcane Power all raise your threat too. Take your spec's 30% threat talent, use a threat meter, and keep Ice Block bound in case you pull aggro.
Before Dec 9
- Get to 56 for Arcane Brilliance, then 60, and buy Arcane Powder, Rune of Portals and Rune of Teleportation.
- Re-check your talents: Frost Blast, Piercing Ice and Arcane Focus are gone, and Precision moved to Frost tier 1.
- Bind Counterspell, Remove Lesser Curse and Ice Block where you can hit them fast.
- Think about fire resistance gear and Fire Ward for Onyxia's Lair, and get the Drakefire Amulet to enter.
- Keep your top rank of Blizzard for trash: low ranks still proc less often.
What's still unknown: boss mechanics, which bosses resist which schools, the boss hit cap, the debuff limit, and how Arcane, Fire and Frost compare once real logs exist. We'll update when raids open.
