Our other Mage guides take you from 10 to 60: the starter guide, Frostfire Bolt, Frost, Arcane and Fire. This one covers what comes after 60: which stats each Mage spec should gear for, how much hit you need, and how to plan pre-raid gear before the first raids open.
Key dates (Blizzard): name reservation and early character creation open today, Tuesday Oct 27 at 1:00 p.m. PDT (up to three characters, for upgrade owners). Launch is Nov 4, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. PST. Barrow Deeps (10 players), Hyjal Summit (20) and Onyxia's Lair (40) open Dec 9.
Read this first: the beta stopped at level 30, so nobody has geared a level 60 Mage in Forever yet. The stat weights below come from SixtySim, a community simulator running beta client data and marked "unverified until level 60 opens". It still uses Classic's 17% boss miss chance because Forever hasn't published its own. Treat every number as a starting point.
What Forever changed about caster gear
From Blizzard's Deep Dive recap:
- Hit and crit are each one stat now. Spell, melee and ranged hit are combined, and so are the three kinds of crit. SixtySim points out the useful side effect: an item that says "chance to hit" helps your spells, even if it was made for melee.
- Every dungeon drop was re-examined, unique boss items are now blue (rare) quality, and set bonuses were improved.
- Trinkets lean on situational effects, such as bonuses against one creature type.
Two Forever changes SixtySim builds its Mage numbers on:
- Spell piercing turns into damage. Spell penetration beyond the target's resistance becomes bonus damage on every spell. Against a raid boss with no resistance, one point is worth about two points of spell damage for every spec. Arcane Subtlety already gives 15. SixtySim says the size at 60 is extrapolated from logs at levels 20 to 30, so this is the shakiest number here.
- Wands don't scale with spell damage, so pick a wand for the stats on it, not its damage.
Stat priorities by spec (level 60, simulated)
The weights come from SixtySim (updated Oct 27, pre-raid gear, one boss for one minute, beta data). Each number shows how much a stat is worth in points of spell damage (= 1.00).
| Spec | 1% hit | 1% crit | 1% haste | Per point | Gear for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Arcane | 16.0 | 9.08 | 8.87 | Spell piercing 2.41, Arcane damage 0.92, Intellect 0.90 | Hit, piercing, spell damage, then crit, haste and Intellect |
| Fire | 17.0 | 10.2 | 8.28 | Spell piercing 2.03, Fire damage 0.94, Intellect 0.30 | Hit, then crit, then haste |
| Frost | 15.5 | 8.22 | 12.1 | Spell piercing 2.22, Frost damage 0.83, Intellect 0.15 | Hit, then haste, then crit |
What stands out, per SixtySim:
- Arcane values Intellect almost like spell damage. Each Arcane Blast stack turns 15% of your Intellect into spell damage, so at four stacks 60% of it counts as spell power, and Arcane Mind adds 10% Intellect on top.
- Fire values crit most after hit. A Fire crit does 150% damage and Ignite adds 40% of it over four seconds, so one crit is worth about 2.1 normal hits. It also builds Heating Up and refunds mana through Master of Elements.
- Frost puts haste ahead of crit on one boss, because every extra Frostbolt is another Winter's Chill stack and another roll for Fingers of Frost. Frost damage is worth only 0.83 because Arcane Missiles (from Missile Barrage) do about 16% of the damage in SixtySim's build.
- Spirit and mana per 5 seconds are worth almost nothing on one boss. They only climb on long, multi-target fights, where Arcane Explosion or Flamestrike drains you. For example, on three bosses for three minutes, Arcane Spirit goes to 1.37 and MP5 to 1.22.
wow4ever uses a simpler fixed rule for all damage casters instead of a simulation: hit 1, spell damage 1, crit 0.9, school damage 0.85, MP5 0.6, Intellect 0.45, Spirit 0.15. That's why its list below leans on spell damage more than SixtySim's.
Hit: how much do you need?
- A level-63 boss avoids 17% of your spells before hit. That's Classic's figure, which SixtySim keeps until a level 60 log shows Forever's. SixtySim also says Forever has no 1% floor, so hit keeps helping all the way to 17%.
- Elemental Precision gives Frost and Fire spells 6%, and Arcane Focus gives Arcane spells 5%. SixtySim's pre-raid sets only add 3–5% from gear on top, so no Mage is anywhere near the cap before raids, and every point of hit counts in full.
- A miss costs more than its own damage. A missed Frostbolt adds no Winter's Chill and no Fingers of Frost. A missed Fire spell gives no Ignite, no Heating Up and no Master of Elements refund. A missed Arcane Blast still adds its stack, but you lose its damage and mana.
Crit has no cap. Spells roll crit apart from hit.
Magister's Regalia: the Mage dungeon set
Forever reworked the bonuses on the eight-piece Mage dungeon set. Per the beta client (build 1.60.1.70532), as listed on ForeverDB and ForeverDiff:
| Pieces | Bonus |
|---|---|
| 2 | +8 all resistances |
| 3 | Up to +18 spell damage and healing |
| 4 | When struck, 2% chance to freeze the attacker in place for 3 sec (once every 60 sec) |
| 5 | Your spellcasts have a 5% chance to restore 200 mana |
| 6 | +8 mana per 5 sec |
For comparison, Classic's version was +200 armor (2), up to +23 spell damage (4), a freeze chance when struck (6) and +8 all resistances (8). So the damage bonus now comes at three pieces instead of four, and the set tops out at six.
Caveats: the item stats on each piece are still hidden, and Blizzard hasn't confirmed Forever's drop sources. Magister's pieces don't show up in SixtySim's current pre-raid picks. SixtySim's sets do use three quest rewards (Sorcerer's Crown, Gloves and Boots), which it describes as a separate "Sorcerer's Regalia" with resistances at 2 pieces and 23 spell damage at 6. We couldn't find that set on ForeverDB to confirm it, so treat that part as unverified.
Pre-raid planning: where the two lists agree and disagree
Both sites build Mage pre-raid lists automatically from beta data:
- Both pick Mantle of the Timbermaw (shoulders) and Belt of the Archmage, both Tailoring crafts that bind on equip, so you can buy them.
- Chest: SixtySim picks Robe of the Archmage for every spec. It's a Tailoring craft that binds on pickup, so only a Tailor can wear it. It also restores 375 to 625 mana once every five minutes. Without Tailoring, the next chest costs 4.9 DPS (Arcane) to 15.5 DPS (Fire) in SixtySim's sets. wow4ever picks Robe of Winter Night.
- Weapons: for Arcane and Frost, SixtySim picks Sageblade, a bind-on-equip Blacksmithing craft with 94 spell damage and 1% hit, plus an off hand such as Therazane's Touch (vendor). Fire takes Elemental Mage Staff (world drop, 100 Fire damage, 8 spell piercing) with the Spellblasting enchant. wow4ever picks Radiant Staff, an Enchanting craft.
- Head: SixtySim mostly uses Sorcerer's Crown (quest reward), with Spellpower Goggles Xtreme Plus (needs Engineering 270) for some sets. wow4ever picks Spellweaver's Turban from General Drakkisath in Upper Blackrock Spire.
Here's why they disagree. Per Blizzard's interviews (as reported by WoW Classic Forever), there's no Dungeon Journal, and you can't see an item's stats until it has dropped for you or on your server. SixtySim only uses items whose Forever stats are published, and wow4ever says many items still use Classic numbers until launch. So use the lists to plan where to go, not as a final shopping list, and compare drops with the weights above.
Things that show up across SixtySim's three specs and are worth starting now:
- Vendor: Pix Xizzix in Stranglethorn Vale sells Arcanoweave Cloak and Blessed Band of Light (each with 1% hit), Channeler's Ring and the trinket Weakness Analyzer (22 spell damage, and its use adds 5% crit until your next crit, every 90 seconds). The cloak leads its slot by about 8.6–10.4 DPS.
- Quest trinket: Talisman of Ascendance from the Eastern Plaguelands. Each spell hit after you use it adds 40 spell damage, up to five stacks.
- Reputation: legs from Warsong Gulch (Sentinel's Silk Leggings for the Alliance, Outrider's Silk Leggings for the Horde), and Brilliant Watcher's Signet at Exalted with The Watchers. Wear the Revered version while you finish.
- Enchants: Arcanum of Focus (8 spell damage) on head and legs, Greater Spellpower on bracers, and Forever lets you enchant necklaces (Spell Power, 6 spell damage). The bracer and off-hand formulas come from the Merchant's Favor vendors: Alynsia in Redridge (Alliance) and Beneris in The Barrens (Horde). The Minor Haste glove enchant in SixtySim's Frost set is listed by Wowhead as PTR only, so it may not be obtainable.
- Consumables: Flask of Supreme Power is worth the most (10–11% in every spec), then Brilliant Wizard Oil, Greater Arcane Elixir and Lobster Stew, which Forever made a 28 spell damage food.
Where to farm at 55–60
Blizzard's new endgame dungeons are Blackmaw Hold (55–60) and Shaper's Terrace (58–60), and Icy Veins still lists their loot as "Coming Soon". The Classic endgame dungeons are also in Forever: Blackrock Depths, Lower and Upper Blackrock Spire, Dire Maul, Scholomance and Stratholme (Icy Veins dungeon overview). Bind-on-pickup green and blue dungeon drops give their appearance to everyone eligible, so nobody needs to roll on gear just for the look (Blizzard).
Still unclear
- Forever's spell miss chance against a raid boss. The 17% figure is Classic's.
- How big spell piercing's bonus damage really is at 60 (extrapolated from level 20–30 logs).
- Real item stats and drop sources, especially from the new dungeons, and where Magister's Regalia drops.
- Whether SixtySim's "Sorcerer's Regalia" six-piece bonus is real in the current client.
- Whether the Minor Haste glove formula can be learned at launch.
