Arcane Mage Leveling in WoW Forever: Level 10–60, Arcane Blast, Missile Barrage, Rotation, Dungeons

This is our level 10–60 guide to Arcane Mage, the spec Blizzard reworked most. The other Mage guides: Mage starter guide, Frost guide, Fire guide, Frostfire Bolt hybrid guide. The beta closed on October 23. Character creation opens October 27 and the game launches November 4, 2026 (3:00 p.m. PST) with a permanent level 60 cap. The beta stopped at level 30, so everything from level 31 to 60 below comes from the datamined talent trees and trainer lists and from published leveling plans. Nobody has played it yet, and we mark it that way.

Data note: the last beta build was 1.60.1.70532 (Oct 22), which has the same talents, spells and items as the Oct 16 build 70450, plus hotfixes through Oct 23 (foreverchanges.pro). Blizzard can still change numbers before launch.

Is Arcane a good leveler?

It's the most argued spec in the guides. Icy Veins writes that Arcane "isn't just viable, it's promising" and lists the pros as a new playstyle, strong talent synergy and benefits from the new gearing rules, and the cons as low control and survivability, gear dependence and downtime from bad luck. WoW Forever DB's Arcane page is more cautious: it tells you to level as Frost and uses a build that goes into Arcane at level 34 (https://wowfdb.com/classes/mage/arcane/leveling/). On talentsforever, 30.5% of the 75,995 Mage leveling builds planned between Sept 18 and Oct 16 led with Arcane (49.5% led with Frost, 20.1% with Fire).

What changed on Oct 15 (foreverchanges.pro) is why older guides on the web are out of date:

  • Arcane Blast was redesigned. It's now a 1.5-second cast. Each cast adds spell damage equal to 15% of your Intellect and raises its mana cost by 175%, up to 4 stacks, for 15 seconds. The base mana cost is unchanged, and its damage and spell-damage coefficient are 40% lower.
  • Missile Barrage moved to row 1 as a 2-point talent. It gives Arcane Blast a 40% chance, and Arcane Wrath, Fireball, Frostbolt, Frost Blast and Frostfire Bolt a 20% chance, to make your next Arcane Missiles free, 50% shorter and firing every 0.5 seconds (client text). Blizzard's notes say Arcane Missiles hits can trigger it too, but the tooltip no longer does.
  • Presence of Mind is spent by spell casts, and Missile Barrage no longer lowers the cost and duration of a second Arcane Missiles.
  • Arcane Concentration's Clearcasting no longer rolls once per target, and can't trigger out of combat or from Dampen or Amplify Magic.
  • Arcane Wrath is a new 16-point talent (a 3.5-sec cast with a 6-sec cooldown, 120 Arcane damage at its one rank plus spell damage equal to 5% of your maximum mana).

What you get, and when (all points in Arcane)

Arcane has 49 points of talents, so you can fill the whole tree and still have two points over. Talents open by how many points you've spent in the tree. The level below is when the point that unlocks it arrives (the Talented Legacy perk brings it up to five levels earlier):

Opens at (all points in Arcane)TalentRanksNeedsWhat it does at max rank (talent text)
10Arcane Focus5–Improves your chance to hit with Arcane spells by 5%.
10Improved Channeling5–Gives your Arcane Missiles spell a 100% chance and your Arcane Blast and Arcane Wrath spells a 70% chance to not lose casting time when you take damage.
10Missile Barrage2–Gives your Arcane Blast spell a 40% chance, and your Arcane Wrath, Fireball, Frostbolt, Frost Blast, and Frostfire Bolt spells a 20% chance to reduce the channeled duration of your next Arcane Missiles spell…
10Wand Specialization2–Increases your damage with Wands by 25%.
15Arcane Concentration5–Gives you a 10% chance of entering a Clearcasting state after any damage spell hits a target. The Clearcasting state reduces the mana cost of your next damage spell by 100%.
15Arcane Resilience2–Increases your Armor by an amount equal to 50% of your Intellect.
15Arcane Subtlety2–Reduces your target's resistance to all your spells by 15 and reduces the threat caused by your Arcane spells by 30%.
15Magic Absorption2–Increases all your resistances by 10 and causes all spells you fully resist to restore 2% of your total mana. Cannot trigger more often than 1 time per sec.
20Arcane Blast1–Blasts the target with energy, dealing 32 Arcane damage. Each time you cast Arcane Blast, you gain 15% of your Intellect as Spell Damage and the mana cost of Arcane Blast is increased by 175%. Effect stacks…
20Arcane Geometry2–Increases the range of your Arcane spells by 6 yards.
20Arcane Impact3–Increases the critical strike chance of your Arcane spells by 6%.
25Arcane Meditation3Arcane ConcentrationAllows 50% of your Mana regeneration to continue while casting.
25Arcane Shielding2–Decreases the Mana lost per point of damage taken when your Mana Shield spell is active by 33% and increases the resistances granted by your Mage Armor spell by 50%.
25Arcane Wrath1Arcane BlastLaunches a projectile of pure Arcane energy at the enemy target, causing 120 Arcane damage. This spell gains additional Spell Damage equal to 5% of your maximum Mana.
25Improved Counterspell2–Your Counterspell also Silences the target for 4 seconds.
30Arcane Mind5–Increases your Intellect by 10% and increases the critical strike damage bonus of your Arcane spells by 100%.
30Presence of Mind1–When activated, your next Mage spell with a casting time less than 10 seconds becomes an instant cast spell.
35Arcane Instability3–Increases the damage done by your spells by 3% and your critical strike chance by 3%.
40Arcane Power1Presence of MindFor the next 15 seconds, your spells deal 30% more damage while costing 30% more mana to cast.

So if you put everything into Arcane, Arcane Blast and Arcane Impact open at level 20, Arcane Meditation and Arcane Wrath at 25, Presence of Mind and Arcane Mind at 30, Arcane Instability at 35 and Arcane Power at 40. Those levels are our arithmetic from the talent data (10 points in the tree plus one), not a published order.

What Icy Veins says to take

Icy Veins' Arcane leveling guide (Oct 15) doesn't give a usable 10–60 order. Its talent calculator link was built on an older version of the tree and doesn't read as a valid build against the current data (it asks for rank 2 of the one-rank Arcane Power), so we aren't copying it. Its text names these as the most important talents, which still exist:

  • Improved Channeling (spell pushback protection for Arcane Missiles and Arcane Blast), Arcane Subtlety (client text: 15 less target resistance and 30% less threat from Arcane spells), Arcane Blast, Missile Barrage, Arcane Meditation (50% of your regeneration while casting) and Arcane Mind (+10% Intellect and double the crit damage bonus of Arcane spells).
  • From Fire, Incineration (+6% crit on Arcane Blast, Fire Blast, Ice Lance and Scorch). Icy Veins also names "Wake of Fire", but that talent became Improved Fire Blast again on Oct 15, with no bonus on kills.
  • Arcane Mages don't need to dip into other trees: Fire adds "a small damage boost early on", and Frost "defensive talents" but little damage.

Treat Icy Veins' own description of Arcane Blast ("empowers Arcane Missiles") as out of date, because of the Oct 15 redesign above.

Icy Veins' milestone table lists Arcane Blast at 20, Missile Barrage at 25 and Arcane Explosion at 14. Missile Barrage is now a row-1 talent and no longer needs 16 points, so that line is out of date too.

WoW Forever DB's order (Frost first, then Arcane)

WoW Forever DB's Arcane page takes the Frost route to 33, then goes into Arcane. It was written before the Oct 20 hotfix, so one row no longer exists:

LevelTalentTree
10–11Wand Specialization 2/2Arcane
12–16Improved Frostbolt 5/5Frost
17–19Frostbite 3/3Frost
20–21Permafrost 2/3Frost
22Ice LanceFrost
23Permafrost 3/3Frost
24–26Piercing Ice 3/3 (removed Oct 20)Frost
27Ice BlockFrost
28–30Shatter 3/3Frost
31Ice Shards 1/5Frost
32–33Fingers of Frost 2/2Frost
34–36Arcane Focus 3/5Arcane
37–41Arcane Concentration 5/5Arcane
42–44Arcane Impact 3/3Arcane
45–46Arcane Focus 5/5Arcane
47Missile Barrage 1/2Arcane
48–50Arcane Meditation 3/3Arcane
51Cold SnapFrost
52Arcane Geometry 1/2Arcane
53Presence of MindArcane
54–57Arcane Mind 4/5Arcane
58–60Arcane Instability 3/3Arcane
  • Piercing Ice is gone, so its three points (24–26) are unassigned. WoW Forever DB hasn't updated that build, and neither have we: we don't know where it would put them.
  • Arcane Blast isn't in the order at all, although WoW Forever DB's own rotation page (page) tells you to cast it up to four times. Arcane Blast needs 10 points in Arcane, which this order only reaches at 42–44.
  • Without Piercing Ice it ends at about 28 Arcane / 20 Frost. Ice Block and Shatter need 15 points in Frost, and the order would only have 12 by level 27, so the three freed points have to go to another Frost talent first (our reading of the gates), or those two stay locked.

Where the guides differ

  • Frost first or Arcane first. WoW Forever DB spends 33 levels in Frost, Icy Veins says Arcane doesn't need it. Mobalytics, as summarised by WoW Forever Tier List, suggests switching to Arcane after 25 once Missile Barrage is in reach, which predates Missile Barrage moving to row 1.
  • How many Arcane Blasts. Icy Veins says cast it 2–3 times, or until Missile Barrage procs, then Arcane Missiles. WoW Forever DB says up to four, then spend the stacks with Arcane Missiles.
  • Arcane Power. WoW Forever DB's rotation page uses it from 40 (+30% damage and +30% mana cost for 15 s, every 3 minutes), but its own 10–60 order never takes it. It needs 30 points in Arcane and Presence of Mind, so Arcane-first builds reach it at 40 (our arithmetic). Presence of Mind and Evocation's 8-minute cooldown are labelled unconfirmed there.

Rotation

Single target (Icy Veins): stand at max range. Once you have Arcane Geometry, start combat at 36 yards. Before that, open with Frostbolt to snare the enemy. Cast Arcane Blast 2–3 times, or until Missile Barrage procs, then Arcane Missiles. Repeat. Finish a low-health enemy with your wand.

WoW Forever DB's priority list: buffs on, Frostbolt to pull, Arcane Missiles at once on a Missile Barrage proc, Arcane Blast up to four times and then spend the stacks, Arcane Concentration procs on an Arcane Blast, and Fire Blast or a Presence of Mind Arcane Blast when you must move.

Icy Veins' tips:

  • Don't overkill. At 30 health left, use Scorch or your wand, not a 90-damage spell.
  • Don't spend Clearcasting while a Missile Barrage proc is up. Use the Clearcast on another spell and dump your Arcane Missiles.
  • It's okay to take damage. Don't waste mana Blinking away from one half-dead mob.

AoE (Icy Veins): round the mobs up (body-pull, wand, or a rank-1 spell), Frost Nova, Cone of Cold if you have it, then Arcane Explosion spam. In dungeons, stand near the tank and press Arcane Explosion, or if that's unsafe stand back and use Blizzard. Don't AoE three or fewer mobs. WoW Forever DB's pack list adds Flamestrike first if a tank is holding them.

Mana, and what each level gives you

Arcane Mages burn mana: Icy Veins says Intellect gives "much-needed breathing room" and Spirit lets you drink less. Evocation restores most of your mana over 8 seconds (WoW Forever DB lists an 8-minute cooldown, unconfirmed), and a new Mana Gem comes at 28, 38, 48 and 58.

Icy Veins' own milestone table for Mages: 14 Arcane Explosion, 20 Blink, Evocation and city teleports, 26 Cone of Cold, 28, 38, 48 and 58 a new Mana Gem, 30 city teleports and your 21-point talent, 40 city portals, your 31-point talent and Frostfire Bolt.

  • 28–30, for reference: Conjure Mana Agate (28), Arcane Blast rank 2, Pyroblast rank 3 and teleports to Darnassus and Thunder Bluff (30).
  • 32: Arcane Missiles rank 4, Conjure Food rank 4, Flamestrike rank 3, Frost Ward rank 2, Frostbolt rank 6. 34: Mage Armor (your regeneration armor, per WoW Forever DB), Scorch rank 3, Cone of Cold rank 2, Ice Lance rank 3.
  • 36: Arcane Wrath rank 2, Blast Wave rank 2, Fireball rank 7, Pyroblast rank 4, Blizzard rank 3, Frost Blast rank 2. 38: Conjure Mana Jade, Arcane Explosion rank 4, Fire Blast rank 5, Frostbolt rank 7.
  • 40: Frostfire Bolt, portals (Stormwind, Ironforge, Orgrimmar, Undercity), Arcane Blast rank 3, Arcane Missiles rank 5, Polymorph rank 3, Frost Nova rank 3, Ice Armor rank 2, Scorch rank 4, Flamestrike rank 4. Level 40 is also when you get the 31-point talents (Arcane Power, Combustion, Ice Barrier).
  • 42: Fireball rank 8, Pyroblast rank 5, Cone of Cold rank 3, Ice Lance rank 4, Arcane Intellect rank 4. 44: Blast Wave rank 3, Blizzard rank 4, Frostbolt rank 8. 46: Mage Armor rank 2, Fire Blast rank 6, Ice Barrier rank 2, Arcane Explosion rank 5. 48: Conjure Mana Citrine, Arcane Missiles rank 6, Arcane Wrath rank 3, Fireball rank 9, Flamestrike rank 5, Pyroblast rank 6, Frost Blast rank 3, Ice Lance rank 5.
  • 50: Portals to Darnassus and Thunder Bluff, Teleport: Dalaran (listed as new; WoW Forever DB says it is Alliance only), Arcane Blast rank 4, Frostfire Bolt rank 2, Cone of Cold rank 4, Frostbolt rank 9, Ice Armor rank 3. 52–54: Ice Barrier rank 3, Blast Wave rank 4, Scorch rank 6, Fireball rank 10, Pyroblast rank 7, Fire Blast rank 7, Frost Nova rank 4.
  • 56: Arcane Brilliance (a group-wide Intellect buff), Arcane Missiles ranks 7 and 8, Flamestrike rank 6, Frostbolt rank 10, Ice Lance rank 6. 58: Conjure Mana Ruby, Mage Armor rank 3, Ice Barrier rank 4, Scorch rank 7.
  • 60: the top ranks: Fireball ranks 11 and 12, Frostbolt rank 11, Frostfire Bolt rank 3, Arcane Blast rank 5, Arcane Wrath rank 4, Pyroblast rank 8, Polymorph rank 4, Blast Wave rank 5.

Trainer levels are from wowforever.one's Mage spell list and WoW Forever DB's Mage pages. Past level 30 they're data, not play.

Teleports to your capital come at 20 (Icy Veins' table), portals for your party at 40 and a Dalaran teleport at 50 (wowforever.one).

Gear and professions

Icy Veins' gear notes for Mages (written for levels up to 30; the same page says it can't advise past the beta cap):

  • Wands: Greater Magic Wand is strong into your 20s. The Gravestone Scepter comes from the Blackfathom Deeps quest Blackfathom Villainy from level 18, and Icy Veins calls it your best wand until at least 30. At 30 a class quest gives a spec wand such as the Nether Force Wand.
  • Staves: Alliance get the Golemheart Stave from Hall of Thanes at 13, the Horde the Staff of Orgrimmar from Ragefire Chasm. Emberstone Staff (The Deadmines) and the Crescent Staff (Wailing Caverns) follow at 17. An Enchanter can craft a Glimmering Staff at 25, and the Death Prophet Spine from Razorfen Kraul is an option nearer 30.
  • Armor: Tailors craft the Pearly Circlet at 20, which lasts into the 30s. Talbar Mantle is an early shoulder. Rings start to show at 16 (the Alliance quest Minor Channeling Ring, or the Philanthropist's Ring for handing in 20 books to a library).
  • Stats: Spell Power first, since spells deal less damage by default and scale better with it. Then Intellect and Spirit, and only enough Stamina to survive AoE pulls and dungeons.
  • Craft at login. Empty your mana to conjure food, water and a Mana Gem. Icy Veins' trick: join a Battleground and cast for free in the preparation room, then /afk out.
  • Teleports from level 20. Never set your Hearthstone to a capital city you can teleport to.
  • Get a wand early. At low levels wands often out-damage your spells (Icy Veins).
  • Professions: Icy Veins recommends Tailoring with Enchanting: Tailoring now gives good gear at every level, and Enchanting gives personal enchants and craftable wands. If speed matters more, two gathering professions give steady gold.
  • Do each dungeon once with its quests. Dungeon quests carry far more XP than before.
  • Make friends. Mage is self-sufficient, but Forever rewards group play, and a stack of free water earns goodwill.

Zones, 31–60

This is Classic routing laid over Forever's zone levels, from WoW Forever DB. The new Forever zones (Riverglades, Hyjal and others) weren't playable past level 30 in the beta, so their level ranges are announced, not tested.

  • 31–40: Arathi Highlands, Stranglethorn Vale, Desolace and Alterac (30–40), then Dustwallow Marsh, Badlands and Swamp of Sorrows. Riverglades, a new contested zone, is announced for about 35–45.
  • 41–50: Tanaris, Feralas, the Hinterlands, Searing Gorge, Swamp of Sorrows and Azshara.
  • 51–60: Un'Goro Crater, Felwood, Burning Steppes, the Western and Eastern Plaguelands, Winterspring and Silithus.

Those nine are the new dungeons. The older Classic dungeons are in Forever too, and Icy Veins' dungeon overview (updated Oct 24) gives their ranges: Razorfen Downs 37–46, Scarlet Monastery Armory 36–44 and Cathedral 38–46, Uldaman 41–51, Zul'Farrak 44–54, Maraudon 46–55, Sunken Temple 50–60, Blackrock Depths 52–60, Dire Maul 54–60 (East) and 56–60 (North, West), Lower Blackrock Spire 55–60, Scholomance 58–60, Stratholme 58–60 and Upper Blackrock Spire 59–60. Other sites list slightly different ranges for the same dungeons (for example the Hall of Thanes as 13–18 versus 13–20), so treat any range as a guide. Only dungeons up to level 30 were open in the beta. Do each dungeon once with its quests in the log, since dungeon quests now carry most of the XP and spamming runs is no longer the fastest way up (Icy Veins).

In dungeons your threat is the problem: Arcane Subtlety cuts your Arcane threat by 30%, and Arcane Missiles and Arcane Blast generate it fast. Let the tank get a few hits in first and keep Polymorph for a second target.

Level 60 and what comes next

Launch has nine five-player dungeons and no raids. Barrow Deeps (10 players), Hyjal Summit (20) and Onyxia's Lair (40) open on December 9, and all raids are planned to reset weekly. Onyxia's Lair needs the Drakefire Amulet to enter (Blizzard's raid overview). So the first five weeks are for reaching 60, gearing from dungeons and professions, and picking your Legacy perks. At 60 your 51 talent points are all spent and builds start to differ from leveling builds, so check a PvE guide once you get there.

Legacy is Forever's new account-style perk system: challenges such as reaching level 25, 45 and 60 on a class, completing every dungeon, exploring zones or clearing raids earn Legacy Points, which you spend in the Adventure, Professions and Resourcefulness trees. Perks like Well Rested (rested XP builds 4–20% faster and caps 4–20% higher) and Talented (talent steps come up to five levels sooner, per WoW Forever DB) are worth picking early (Icy Veins Legacy guide).

Common mistakes

  • Following an Arcane build from before Oct 15 or Oct 20. Anything that spends points on Piercing Ice, or expects Missile Barrage at 16 points, is out of date.
  • Stacking Arcane Blast until you're dry. Stop when the next Blast costs more than you can spare or the mob is nearly dead.
  • Spending Clearcasting while Missile Barrage is up.
  • AoE on three or fewer mobs, when you'd be spending your whole mana bar.
  • Treating the 31–60 rows as proven. They aren't.

Still unclear

  • Everything from level 31 to 60 is untested. The beta stopped at 30, so Arcane Blast's mana cost at 4 stacks against real level-40 mobs, Arcane Power and Arcane Instability are only text.
  • We have no usable published 10–60 Arcane order. Icy Veins' calculator build predates the tree changes, and WoW Forever DB's still spends on Piercing Ice and skips Arcane Blast.
  • Is Arcane viable as a leveler? Icy Veins says yes, WoW Forever DB says to level Frost.
  • Does Missile Barrage trigger from Arcane Missiles hits? Blizzard's notes say yes, the tooltip says no.
  • Dungeon ranges differ a little between Blizzard, Icy Veins and fan sites.
