Fire Mage Leveling in WoW Forever: Talent Order 10–60, Pyroblast, Heating Up, Frostfire Bolt, Dungeons

This is our level 10–60 guide to Fire Mage, the burst-damage spec. The other Mage guides: Mage starter guide, Frost guide, Arcane guide, Frostfire Bolt hybrid guide. The beta closed on October 23. Character creation opens October 27 and the game launches November 4, 2026 (3:00 p.m. PST) with a permanent level 60 cap. The beta stopped at level 30, so everything from level 31 to 60 below comes from the datamined talent trees and trainer lists and from published leveling plans. Nobody has played it yet, and we mark it that way.

Data note: the last beta build was 1.60.1.70532 (Oct 22), which has the same talents, spells and items as the Oct 16 build 70450, plus hotfixes through Oct 23 (foreverchanges.pro). Blizzard can still change numbers before launch.

Is Fire a good leveler?

Icy Veins says "Frost is no longer the only viable spec - Fire also has a lot more to offer, and is very enjoyable to level and play." It lists the pros as high direct damage, volatility, scaling with gear and a fleshed-out early game, and the cons as weak defensives, heavy mana use, gear dependence and PvP weakness. WoW Forever DB tells you to level as Frost and takes a route that goes into Arcane (see below). On talentsforever, 20.1% of the 75,995 Mage leveling builds planned between Sept 18 and Oct 16 led with Fire. Warcraft Tavern, per WoW Forever Tier List, says Fire only becomes worth playing past 30.

Frostfire Bolt, learned at level 40, is the reason Fire has a 10–60 route of its own. Icy Veins: it replaces Fireball from 40, and it benefits from talents that modify both Fire and Frost spells, such as Ignite and Ice Shards, so Fire Mages go into Frost after Combustion. Our Frostfire Bolt guide has the details.

Talent order, levels 10–60 (Icy Veins)

This is Icy Veins' Fire leveling build, decoded against the current talent data (so it includes the Oct 20 changes). It finishes 32 Fire / 19 Frost.

LevelTalent (tree)RankWhat it does (talent text)
10–14Improved Fireball (Fire)5/5Reduces the casting time of your Fireball and Frostfire Bolt spells by 0.5 second.
15–16Flame Throwing (Fire)2/2Increases the range of your Fire spells by 6 yards.
17–19Ignite (Fire)3/5Your critical strikes from Fire damage spells cause the target to burn for an additional 24% of your spell's damage over 4 seconds.
20Pyroblast (Fire)1/1Hurls an immense fiery boulder that causes 110 Fire damage and an additional 44 Fire damage over 12 seconds.
21–22Ignite (Fire)5/5Your critical strikes from Fire damage spells cause the target to burn for an additional 40% of your spell's damage over 4 seconds.
23–24Improved Fire Blast (Fire)2/2Reduces the cooldown of your Fire Blast spell by 2 seconds and increases its range by 15 yards.
25Heating Up (Fire)1/1Non-periodic critical strikes with Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast, and Scorch reduce the cast time of your next Pyroblast cast within 20 seconds by 25%, stacking…
26–28Burning Soul (Fire)3/3Gives your Fire spells a 70% chance to not lose casting time when you take damage and reduces the threat caused by your Fire spells by 30%.
29Master of Elements (Fire)1/3Your Fire and Frost critical strikes will refund 10% of their base mana cost.
30Blast Wave (Fire)1/1A wave of flame radiates outward from the caster, damaging all enemies caught within the blast for 163 Fire damage, and Dazing them for 50% reduced movement speed for 6…
31–32Master of Elements (Fire)3/3Your Fire and Frost critical strikes will refund 30% of their base mana cost.
33–37Critical Mass (Fire)5/5Increases the critical strike chance of your Fire spells by 10%.

41Fire Power (Fire)3/3Increases the damage done by your Fire spells by 3% per your Fire effects on the target, up to a maximum increase of 12%. Effects which mix multiple schools of magic do…
42–44Elemental Precision (Frost)3/3Improves your chance to hit with Frost and Fire spells by 6%.
45–46Improved Frostbolt (Frost)2/5Reduces the casting time of your Frostbolt and Frost Blast spells by 0.2 second.
47–51Ice Shards (Frost)5/5Increases the critical strike damage bonus of your Frost spells by 100%.
52–54Permafrost (Frost)3/3Increases the duration of your Chill effects by 33% and reduces the target's speed by an additional 10%.
55–56Frostbite (Frost)2/3Gives your Chill effects a 10% chance to Freeze the target for 5 seconds.
57Ice Block (Frost)1/1You become encased in a block of ice, protecting you from all physical attacks and spells for 10 seconds, but during that time you cannot attack, move, or cast spells.
58–60Shatter (Frost)3/3Increases the critical strike chance of all your spells against Frozen targets by 50%.

How it fits together (Icy Veins' text): prioritise Heating Up and Master of Elements as fast as possible, since they add the most long-term value. Ignite (up to 40% extra on Fire crits) looks tempting to max early, but crit chance is low at low levels, so you may want other talents first. Pyroblast is "your single hardest-hitting spell", and Combustion raises your Fire crit chance until you've landed three crits. After Combustion at 40, the Frost points are Elemental Precision, Improved Frostbolt, Ice Shards, Permafrost, Frostbite, Ice Block and Shatter.

One thing in Icy Veins' text is out of date. It tells you to take "Wake of Fire", but that became Improved Fire Blast again on Oct 15, with no bonus on kills; Fire Blast just gets 8/15 more yards of range.

Where the guides differ

WoW Forever DB's Fire order (page) in short: Wand Specialization 2/2 (10–11), Improved Fire Blast 2/2 (12–13), Improved Fireball 5/5 (14–18), Ignite to 3/5 (19–21), Burning Soul 3/3 (22–24), Ignite 4/5 (25), Pyroblast (26), Heating Up (27), Ignite 5/5 (28), Master of Elements (29–31), Critical Mass 5/5 (32–36), Blast Wave (37), Incineration 1/3 (38), Fire Power 3/3 (39–41), Combustion (42), Elemental Precision 5/5 (43–47), Incineration 3/3 (48–49), Arcane Focus 3/5 (50–52), Arcane Concentration 5/5 (53–57) and Impact 3/3 (58–60). It finishes with 36 points in Fire, 5 in Frost and 10 in Arcane.

  • Out of date after Oct 20: that order has Elemental Precision 5/5, which is now 3 ranks, so two of its points have no home.
  • Wand Specialization first. WoW Forever DB spends 2 points on Wand Specialization at 10–11. Icy Veins starts with Improved Fireball and doesn't take it at all.
  • Pyroblast at 20 or 26, Blast Wave at 30 or 37, Combustion at 40 or 42. Icy Veins is earlier on all three.
  • Where the extra points go. Icy Veins goes into Frost after 41 (the Frostfire Bolt route). WoW Forever DB goes into Arcane (Arcane Focus, Arcane Concentration) and takes Impact last.
  • Fire Power was redesigned on Oct 15: 1/2/3% more Fire damage for each of your Fire effects on the target (Ignite, Improved Scorch, Fireball, Pyroblast, Impact), up to 12%, and Frostfire Bolt benefits but doesn't count. Icy Veins and WoW Forever DB both spend all 3 points.

Rotation

Single target (Icy Veins): stand at max range. Once you have Flame Throwing, open pulls at 41 yards. Cast Fireball (Frostfire Bolt from 40), then Fire Blast if the enemy is low or you have a proc. Don't overkill: use Scorch or your wand to finish.

WoW Forever DB's priority list: Pyroblast to open on a fresh target (its burn lasts 12 s), Scorch until Improved Scorch is at five stacks on a target that will live (refresh before 30 s), Pyroblast at three Heating Up stacks (1.5-sec cast; two stacks if you only have time for a 3-sec cast), Fireball as the filler (Frostfire Bolt from 40) and Fire Blast to finish or while moving (that last line is labelled unconfirmed). Every Fire Blast adds a Heating Up stack (a crit adds two).

Combustion from 40 (WoW Forever DB): each Fire hit adds 10% Fire crit until three more crits land, so have the Scorch stacks up first. WoW Forever DB also lists, as unconfirmed, Presence of Mind on an Arcane-split build for an instant Pyroblast.

AoE (Icy Veins): Fire has the strongest burst AoE, and the risk is pulling aggro fast. Round the mobs up (body-pull or a rank-1 spell), Frost Nova if you're alone, Flamestrike underneath them, Blast Wave if you have it (or Cone of Cold), then Arcane Explosion to finish. Don't spend this on fewer than four enemies, don't use Blast Wave and Cone of Cold back to back (the pack reaches you when both slows end) and keep Mana Shield for near-death moments.

What each level gives you

Icy Veins' own milestone table for Mages: 14 Arcane Explosion, 20 Blink, Evocation and city teleports, 26 Cone of Cold, 28, 38, 48 and 58 a new Mana Gem, 30 city teleports and your 21-point talent, 40 city portals, your 31-point talent and Frostfire Bolt.

  • 28–30, for reference: Conjure Mana Agate (28), Arcane Blast rank 2, Pyroblast rank 3 and teleports to Darnassus and Thunder Bluff (30).
  • 32: Arcane Missiles rank 4, Conjure Food rank 4, Flamestrike rank 3, Frost Ward rank 2, Frostbolt rank 6. 34: Mage Armor (your regeneration armor, per WoW Forever DB), Scorch rank 3, Cone of Cold rank 2, Ice Lance rank 3.

  • 60: the top ranks: Fireball ranks 11 and 12, Frostbolt rank 11, Frostfire Bolt rank 3, Arcane Blast rank 5, Arcane Wrath rank 4, Pyroblast rank 8, Polymorph rank 4, Blast Wave rank 5.

Trainer levels are from wowforever.one's Mage spell list and WoW Forever DB's Mage pages. Past level 30 they're data, not play.

Icy Veins' stat order for Fire: Spell Power, then Critical Strike whenever you find it (Fire is built on spell crits), Intellect, Spirit (it's "extremely underrated" for getting back into action faster) and enough Stamina to survive.

Gear and professions

Icy Veins' gear notes for Mages (written for levels up to 30; the same page says it can't advise past the beta cap):

  • Wands: Greater Magic Wand is strong into your 20s. The Gravestone Scepter comes from the Blackfathom Deeps quest Blackfathom Villainy from level 18, and Icy Veins calls it your best wand until at least 30. At 30 a class quest gives a spec wand such as the Nether Force Wand.
  • Staves: Alliance get the Golemheart Stave from Hall of Thanes at 13, the Horde the Staff of Orgrimmar from Ragefire Chasm. Emberstone Staff (The Deadmines) and the Crescent Staff (Wailing Caverns) follow at 17. An Enchanter can craft a Glimmering Staff at 25, and the Death Prophet Spine from Razorfen Kraul is an option nearer 30.
  • Armor: Tailors craft the Pearly Circlet at 20, which lasts into the 30s. Talbar Mantle is an early shoulder. Rings start to show at 16 (the Alliance quest Minor Channeling Ring, or the Philanthropist's Ring for handing in 20 books to a library).
  • Stats: Spell Power first, since spells deal less damage by default and scale better with it. Then Intellect and Spirit, and only enough Stamina to survive AoE pulls and dungeons.
  • Craft at login. Empty your mana to conjure food, water and a Mana Gem. Icy Veins' trick: join a Battleground and cast for free in the preparation room, then /afk out.
  • Teleports from level 20. Never set your Hearthstone to a capital city you can teleport to.
  • Get a wand early. At low levels wands often out-damage your spells (Icy Veins).
  • Professions: Icy Veins recommends Tailoring with Enchanting: Tailoring now gives good gear at every level, and Enchanting gives personal enchants and craftable wands. If speed matters more, two gathering professions give steady gold.
  • Do each dungeon once with its quests. Dungeon quests carry far more XP than before.
  • Make friends. Mage is self-sufficient, but Forever rewards group play, and a stack of free water earns goodwill.

Zones, 31–60

This is Classic routing laid over Forever's zone levels, from WoW Forever DB. The new Forever zones (Riverglades, Hyjal and others) weren't playable past level 30 in the beta, so their level ranges are announced, not tested.

  • 31–40: Arathi Highlands, Stranglethorn Vale, Desolace and Alterac (30–40), then Dustwallow Marsh, Badlands and Swamp of Sorrows. Riverglades, a new contested zone, is announced for about 35–45.
  • 41–50: Tanaris, Feralas, the Hinterlands, Searing Gorge, Swamp of Sorrows and Azshara.
  • 51–60: Un'Goro Crater, Felwood, Burning Steppes, the Western and Eastern Plaguelands, Winterspring and Silithus.

Those nine are the new dungeons. The older Classic dungeons are in Forever too, and Icy Veins' dungeon overview (updated Oct 24) gives their ranges: Razorfen Downs 37–46, Scarlet Monastery Armory 36–44 and Cathedral 38–46, Uldaman 41–51, Zul'Farrak 44–54, Maraudon 46–55, Sunken Temple 50–60, Blackrock Depths 52–60, Dire Maul 54–60 (East) and 56–60 (North, West), Lower Blackrock Spire 55–60, Scholomance 58–60, Stratholme 58–60 and Upper Blackrock Spire 59–60. Other sites list slightly different ranges for the same dungeons (for example the Hall of Thanes as 13–18 versus 13–20), so treat any range as a guide. Only dungeons up to level 30 were open in the beta. Do each dungeon once with its quests in the log, since dungeon quests now carry most of the XP and spamming runs is no longer the fastest way up (Icy Veins).

In groups, Burning Soul cuts your Fire threat by 30%. Keep AoE for packs of four or more, and let the tank get a few hits in first.

Level 60 and what comes next

Launch has nine five-player dungeons and no raids. Barrow Deeps (10 players), Hyjal Summit (20) and Onyxia's Lair (40) open on December 9, and all raids are planned to reset weekly. Onyxia's Lair needs the Drakefire Amulet to enter (Blizzard's raid overview). So the first five weeks are for reaching 60, gearing from dungeons and professions, and picking your Legacy perks. At 60 your 51 talent points are all spent and builds start to differ from leveling builds, so check a PvE guide once you get there.

Legacy is Forever's new account-style perk system: challenges such as reaching level 25, 45 and 60 on a class, completing every dungeon, exploring zones or clearing raids earn Legacy Points, which you spend in the Adventure, Professions and Resourcefulness trees. Perks like Well Rested (rested XP builds 4–20% faster and caps 4–20% higher) and Talented (talent steps come up to five levels sooner, per WoW Forever DB) are worth picking early (Icy Veins Legacy guide).

Common mistakes

  • Following a pre-Oct 20 Fire order. Elemental Precision 5/5 doesn't exist any more.
  • Taking Wake of Fire because an older page lists it.
  • Spending a big spell on a nearly dead mob. Scorch or your wand will do.
  • Using AoE on fewer than four enemies.
  • Overlapping Blast Wave and Cone of Cold.
  • Maxing Ignite first while your crit chance is low (Icy Veins).

Still unclear

  • Everything from level 31 to 60 is untested. The beta stopped at 30, so Combustion, Frostfire Bolt and Fire Power's 12% cap are only talent text.
  • Is Fire as good as Frost for solo leveling? Icy Veins says it's very enjoyable, WoW Forever DB says to level Frost, and no one has shown numbers.
  • Frostfire Bolt at 40 as the main spell: both guides say to switch to it, and nobody has cast it.
  • Dungeon ranges differ a little between Blizzard, Icy Veins and fan sites.
