Priest Raid Role in WoW: Forever — What Discipline, Holy & Shadow Bring to Barrow Deeps, Hyjal Summit & Onyxia, Fear Ward, Fortitude, Prayer of Mending, and the Nov 2 Launch Changes

Our earlier Priest guides cover the starter basics, Shadow leveling, Holy dungeon healing and Discipline leveling and dungeon healing, plus level 60 gearing. This one is about raid night: what every Priest brings, what each spec adds, how to split the jobs when you have several Priests, and what Blizzard's final pre-launch notes changed.

Key dates (Blizzard): the game launched Nov 4, 2026. Barrow Deeps (10 players), Hyjal Summit (20 players) and Onyxia's Lair (40 players) open on Dec 9.

Read this first: the beta stopped at level 30 and had no raids. Blizzard hasn't revealed boss mechanics for Barrow Deeps or Hyjal Summit; for Onyxia it has said to expect powerful fire attacks and to build fire resistance. Numbers below come from Blizzard's Nov 2 notes and from beta client data shown on community sites. Talent builds assume 51 points at 60, which Blizzard hasn't confirmed. Nothing here has been tested at level 60 yet.

What changed on Nov 2 (official)

From Blizzard's "Beta Development Notes – Updated November 2" (posted the evening of Nov 2, Pacific). Blizzard says that apart from bugs and serious outliers, it doesn't plan big tuning changes before the raids open.

  • Shadow Word: Death backlash is 30% of your maximum health if the target survives (was 10%). Nothing happens on a miss.
  • Power Word: Shield can be replaced by an equal or higher rank (you no longer have to wait for the old shield to fall off).
  • Dark Sacrifice (Undead racial) no longer breaks crowd control.
  • Holy: the Binding Heal talent is removed and replaced by Holy Binding — when you Flash Heal someone else, you also heal yourself for 50% of that amount.
  • Shadow: Vampiric Embrace healing can no longer crit. Devouring Contagion no longer spreads from critters. Cure Disease and Abolish Disease no longer take you out of Shadowform.
  • Every class: low-rank spells no longer lose proc chance (with the Mage Blizzard exception), and roots from procs now have diminishing returns. Salvation is gone for everyone.
  • Races: Human Ruthless drops to 1% crit and The Human Spirit is 10% Spirit; Dwarf gets Artisan's Precision (1% hit); Troll Berserking lasts 15 seconds.
  • Other classes that matter to you: Bear Form and Defensive Stance generate much more threat (Salvation is gone for everyone), and Moonkin Aura and Leader of the Pack give 3% to every kind of crit again but don't stack with each other.

Unclear — Binding Heal: Blizzard's Nov 2 notes say Binding Heal is removed and replaced by Holy Binding. wowforeverprogress's client data still lists Binding Heal as a trainer-taught spell at level 25. Treat the talent swap as official; treat the trainer spell as unclear until someone checks it live at 60.

What every Priest brings

From the spellbook in the beta client data (wowforeverprogress), so every spec has these:

  • Fear Ward (level 20, every race): one fear immunity for 3 minutes on a 3-minute cooldown. Baseline for every Priest race in Forever — critical for Onyxia and any fear-heavy fight.
  • Divine Spirit (level 30) and Prayer of Spirit (level 60): Spirit buffs. Prayer of Spirit is the group version you want before raid night.
  • Devouring Plague (level 20, every race): baseline DoT for every Priest race.
  • Shadow Word: Death (level 32): execute-style nuke. Watch the Nov 2 backlash (30% max health if the target lives).
  • Prayer of Healing: heals the target's party (pets included) within 40 yards of the target — cast on someone in the group that needs it, not necessarily yourself.
  • Renew: Renews from several Priests can share a target (Oct 15: high ranks no longer block others).
  • Fade: reduces twice as much threat as before.
  • Prayer of Fortitude and Prayer of Shadow Protection: the raid Stamina and Shadow-resist buffs. Assign who casts them.
  • Dispel Magic, Abolish Disease, Shackle Undead and Resurrection.
  • Spirit of Redemption (when talented) lasts 15 seconds (up from 10).

What each spec adds

Holy: the group healer. wowforeverprogress's draft build is 17/34/0: Prayer of Mending (the 31-point talent), Litany of Light, Holy Binding and Spiritual Guidance. You're the raid's group-heal pick — PoM bouncing, Prayer of Healing on the right party, and Holy Binding so Flash Heals on others also patch you up. See our gearing guide for why fight length flips Holy's stat weights.

Discipline: the tank/shield healer. The draft build is 33/18/0: Penance, Soul Warding, Renewed Hope, Divine Aegis (non-periodic crit heals create an absorb for 15% of the heal, up to 1200, and it doesn't stack) and Power Infusion. Expect to cover the main tank with shields and Penance, and to hand PI to a designated DPS before the pull.

Shadow: the DPS and the interrupt. The draft build is 16/0/35: Shadow Weaving is personal only — it is not a raid-wide Shadow damage buff for Warlocks any more. Dark Inspiration gives +15% Spirit to your party after Mind Blast or a full Mind Flay channel. Silence is your interrupt. Vampiric Embrace returns 20% of your Shadow damage as healing to the party (and, after Nov 2, that heal can no longer crit). Be careful with Shadow Word: Death on bosses that will survive it — the backlash is now 30% of your max health.

All three drafts assume 51 points at 60. See our gearing guide for hit, crit, Spirit and MP5 priorities; the boss hit cap isn't confirmed yet.

Splitting jobs with several Priests

Based on the abilities above (our suggestion, not an official rule):

  1. Fear Ward assignment on fear bosses (3-minute cooldown). One Priest covers the tank or the designated fear-target; with two, rotate so the ward is always ready for Onyxia.
  1. Fortitude / Spirit / Shadow Protection — agree who buffs so you don't overwrite each other or leave half the raid without Stamina.
  1. Dispel Magic / Abolish Disease by group, so two people don't cleanse the same magic or disease.
  1. Holy vs Disc role split: Holy on group damage (Prayer of Mending, Prayer of Healing); Disc on the tank (shields, Penance, Divine Aegis). Assign Power Infusion before the pull.
  1. Shadow: Silence interrupt on caster adds; Vampiric Embrace party grouping so the heal lands where you want it; remind the raid that Shadow Weaving is not for Warlocks any more.
  1. No Salvation. Healers lean on Silent Resolve and Fade (Fade cuts twice as much threat now); watch a threat meter on heavy heal pulls.

Buffs, Fear Ward and threat without Salvation

There's no Salvation in Forever any more. That leaves Prayer of Fortitude, Divine Spirit / Prayer of Spirit and Prayer of Shadow Protection as the Priest raid buffs, plus Fear Ward as the one-target fear answer every race now has at 20. Tanks lean on their new threat numbers (Bear Form, Defensive Stance, and the stronger tank tools other classes got); healers take Silent Resolve, press Fade early, and open carefully while the tank builds threat. Shadow's personal Shadow Weaving and Vampiric Embrace party heal are the DPS-side contributions — they don't replace a raid Shadow damage buff.

Before Dec 9

  • Get to 60, train Prayer of Spirit, and make sure Fear Ward, Prayer of Fortitude and Prayer of Shadow Protection are bound and ranked up.
  • Re-check your talents: Binding Heal is gone as a talent (replaced by Holy Binding); Shadow Weaving is personal; Vampiric Embrace no longer crits; Cure/Abolish Disease no longer drop Shadowform.
  • Bind Fear Ward, Dispel Magic, Abolish Disease, Fade and (for Shadow) Silence where you can hit them fast; Disc also wants Penance, Power Word: Shield and Power Infusion ready.
  • Plan a Fear Ward rotation for Onyxia's Lair, think about fire-resist gear, and get the Drakefire Amulet to enter.
  • Holy: practice Prayer of Mending + Prayer of Healing on the right party. Disc: practice shield/Penance tank coverage and PI timing. Shadow: practice Silence interrupts and keep Shadow Word: Death off bosses that will live through it.

What's still unknown: boss mechanics, which bosses fear or need disease/magic cleanses, the boss hit cap, the debuff limit, whether Binding Heal still exists as a trainer spell, and how Discipline, Holy and Shadow compare once real logs exist. We'll update when raids open.
