Discipline Priest Leveling and Dungeon Healing in WoW Forever: Talent Order 10–60, Penance, Shields, Dungeons

This is our level 10–60 guide to Discipline Priest: the talent order, how the shield-and-Penance toolkit works, and how to heal dungeons. It is new: until now our Priest guides covered the starter, Holy and Shadow only. The other Priest guides: Priest starter guide, Holy guide, Shadow guide. The beta closed on October 23. Character creation opens October 27 and the game launches November 4, 2026 (3:00 p.m. PST) with a permanent level 60 cap. The beta stopped at level 30, so everything from level 31 to 60 below comes from the datamined talent trees and trainer lists and from published leveling plans. Nobody has played it yet, and we mark it that way.

We built it from the client talent text, Blizzard's beta notes through the Oct 15 build, the Oct 18 hotfix, and the Discipline pages at Icy Veins and WoW Forever DB. Data note: the last beta build was 1.60.1.70532 (Oct 22), which has the same talents, spells and items as the Oct 16 build 70450, plus hotfixes through Oct 23 (foreverchanges.pro). Blizzard can still change numbers before launch.

What Discipline is

Discipline in Forever is the Priest's shield healer, with a lot of damage talent mixed in. Its identity, per Icy Veins, is Improved Power Word: Shield and Penance, and Soul Warding and Renewed Hope cut the downtime of your shield. It is also the tree with Wand Specialization, Mental Strength (+10% Intellect at 5/5), Meditation, Power in Light, Inner Focus and Power Infusion, so almost every Priest spends points here.

As a leveler it is the middle option. Icy Veins' Discipline page tells you to do each dungeon once for its quest and kill XP, and WoW Forever DB says a Priest who levels alone should go Shadow, but that Holy or Discipline level well enough in a duo with a tank. Smite does about half its Classic damage there, so solo Discipline leans on Holy Fire, Shadow Word: Pain, Penance and the wand.

Talent order, 10–60 (Icy Veins)

Icy Veins' Discipline leveling build, decoded against the current talent data, finishes 33 Discipline / 13 Holy / 5 Shadow Magic. The 31–60 rows are a plan, not play. Icy Veins' page also lists a 21-point alternative build and two 26-point builds, Pure Discipline and a Holy Dip, if you want a different level-30 shape.

LevelTalent (tree)RankWhat it does (talent text)
10–11Wand Specialization (Discipline)2/2Increases your damage with Wands by 25%.

17–19Twilight Focus (Holy)3/3Gives your spells a 70% chance to not lose casting time when you take damage.
20–24Power in Light (Discipline)5/5Your Smite and Penance spells deal 10% increased damage to targets afflicted with your Holy Fire or Shadow Word: Pain.
25–27Mental Strength (Discipline)3/5Increases your total Intellect by 6%.
28–30Meditation (Discipline)3/3Allows 50% of your Mana regeneration to continue while casting.
31–32Mental Strength (Discipline)5/5Increases your total Intellect by 10%.
33–35Improved Power Word: Shield (Discipline)3/3Increases the damage absorbed by your Power Word: Shield by 20%.
36Soul Warding (Discipline)1/1Reduces the cooldown on your Power Word: Shield spell by 4 seconds and reduces its mana cost by 15%.
37Mental Agility (Discipline)1/3Reduces the mana cost of your Smite, Holy Fire, and instant cast spells by 3%.
38Penance (Discipline)1/1Launches a volley of holy light at the target, causing 42 Holy damage to an enemy, or 126 healing to an ally, instantly and every 1 seconds for 2 seconds.

47Mental Agility (Discipline)2/3Reduces the mana cost of your Smite, Holy Fire, and instant cast spells by 7%.
48Power Infusion (Discipline)1/1Infuses the target with power, increasing their spell damage and healing done by 20% for 15 seconds.
49–53Holy Specialization (Holy)5/5Increases the critical effect chance of your Holy spells by 5%.
54–58Divine Fury (Holy)5/5Reduces the casting time of your Smite, Holy Fire, Heal, and Greater Heal spells by 0.5 second.
59Mental Agility (Discipline)3/3Reduces the mana cost of your Smite, Holy Fire, and instant cast spells by 10%.
60Inner Focus (Discipline)1/1When activated, reduces the Mana cost of your next spell by 100% and increases its critical effect chance by 25% if it is a non-periodic spell and capable of a critical…

Icy Veins' reasoning, as far as its text goes: Wand Specialization and Spirit Tap first so you can level between groups, Twilight Focus (a 70% chance not to lose casting time to damage), then Power in Light 5/5 (Smite and Penance deal 10% more to a target with your Holy Fire or Shadow Word: Pain) and Mental Strength and Meditation. From 33 the build is the healer's: Improved Power Word: Shield 3/3 (+20% absorb), Soul Warding at 36, Penance at 38, Renewed Hope (39–44), Divine Aegis 3/3 (43, 45–46) and Power Infusion at 48. It then spends the last 10 points on Holy Specialization and Divine Fury, with Mental Agility and Inner Focus taking the last slots at 59 and 60.

WoW Forever DB's order for comparison

WoW Forever DB's Discipline leveling page gives a different order that finishes 33 Discipline / 13 Holy / 5 Shadow Magic. We checked it point by point against the talent gates and it is valid.

Where the guides differ

The two builds spend the same points in the same places, but they put them in a different order.

  • Improved Power Word: Shield. WoW Forever DB takes it at 25–27, Icy Veins at 33–35.
  • Twilight Focus. Icy Veins at 17–19, WoW Forever DB at 48–50.
  • Power in Light. Icy Veins takes 5/5 at 20–24, WoW Forever DB takes 3 at 17–19 and the last 2 at 28–29.
  • Mental Strength. WoW Forever DB takes 5/5 at 20–24. Icy Veins takes 3 at 25–27 and the last 2 at 31–32.
  • Inner Focus. WoW Forever DB at 30, Icy Veins last, at 60.
  • Meditation. Icy Veins at 28–30, WoW Forever DB at 31–33.
  • Mental Agility. WoW Forever DB takes 3/3 at 34–36. Icy Veins takes one point each at 37, 47 and 59.
  • The healing core agrees. Soul Warding (36 vs 37), Penance (38 for both), Renewed Hope (39–44 vs 39–43), Divine Aegis (43–46 vs 44–46) and Power Infusion (48 vs 47) are within a level of each other.
  • Neither build takes Twin Disciplines, Silent Resolve, Improved Inner Fire or Holy Precision.

How Discipline works

  • Power Word: Shield (6; rank 2 at 12, then every six levels up to rank 10 at 60): the absorb you cast before damage lands. The target then has Weakened Soul. A shield can now crit (Sept 24), and since then can replace a shield on a target without Weakened Soul. Improved Power Word: Shield adds 20% at 3/3.
  • Soul Warding: the shield's cooldown is 4 sec shorter and its mana cost 15% lower. WoW Forever DB writes that it leaves the shield with no cooldown. The talent text only says 4 sec.
  • Renewed Hope (5/5): your Flash Heal, Binding Heal, Lesser Heal, Heal, Greater Heal and Penance have +10% crit on a target with Weakened Soul, and Weakened Soul lasts 5 sec less.
  • Penance (talent, level 30 at the earliest): an instant volley of Holy damage on an enemy or healing on a friend that repeats every 1 sec for 2 sec. Rank 2 is at 40, rank 3 at 50 and rank 4 at 60. Power in Light lifts its damage on a target with Holy Fire or Shadow Word: Pain. The Penance talent text in the last client reads 42 damage or 126 healing per volley at rank 1; the Oct 8 notes list 45 and 134. Treat the exact figure as unsettled.
  • Divine Aegis (35 at the earliest): a non-periodic crit heal also puts a shield on the target worth 15% of the heal, up to 1,400, for 12 sec at 3/3. WoW Forever DB says it doesn't stack and lists it as unconfirmed in game.
  • Inner Focus: the next spell costs no mana and has +25% crit if it isn't periodic. Since the Oct 15 build it affects one spell only. WoW Forever DB lists a 3-minute cooldown and says never to use it on Renew.
  • Power Infusion (40 at the earliest): +20% spell damage and healing for 15 sec on a caster partner or on yourself. Unconfirmed in game.
  • Mental Agility (3/3) makes Smite, Holy Fire and instant spells cost 10% less mana, Improved Inner Fire adds 45% armor and 12 charges, and Silent Resolve cuts threat from your spells by 30%.
  • Divine Spirit (30, baseline now) and Prayer of Fortitude (48), Prayer of Spirit (60) are the group buffs. Fear Ward (20) lasts 3 minutes.

Rotation and priorities

WoW Forever DB's Discipline healing priority (level 30), top to bottom:

  1. Power Word: Shield on the tank before the pull, and again when Weakened Soul has gone.
  1. Renew on whoever takes steady damage (Twin Disciplines adds 5% if you took it).
  1. Penance on cooldown for a spike. If nobody needs it, spend it on an enemy.
  1. Heal for steady damage on one target.
  1. Flash Heal when a Heal would land too late. Save it for emergencies.
  1. Prayer of Healing when three or more in one party are hurt, aimed at that party. It heals the target's group, pets included.
  1. Dispel Magic and Cure Disease when a harmful effect matters.

Group damage (WoW Forever DB): shield everyone who will be hit, before it lands. Then Inner Focus into Prayer of Healing (a free cast with extra crit) on the party that took it. From 35, crit heals leave extra shields from Divine Aegis.

Cooldowns and emergencies (WoW Forever DB): Inner Focus (3 min), Fear Ward on the tank just before a fear pull, Fade if you pull aggro, Psychic Scream to scatter what reached you (it can pull more mobs) and, from 40, Power Infusion.

While leveling: shield yourself before the pull. Open with Holy Fire, then Shadow Word: Pain on anything that will outlive its duration. From 30, Penance on cooldown as damage, or on yourself when hurt. Use Smite only if you have spell power behind it, and the wand to finish and on anything already low.

Healing dungeons

This is the dungeon-role section. It is built from Icy Veins' Discipline and Holy healer guides and WoW Forever DB's Discipline rotation page. Everything past level 30 is unplayed.

Mana is the whole job. Icy Veins' advice: don't overheal, use the wand as a filler, downrank when the target isn't in danger (the Oct 8 notes made downranking weaker, so don't lean on it), and remember that the five-second rule only starts when a cast finishes. Icy Veins' stat order for Discipline is Healing Power, MP5, Intellect, Spirit, then Crit, which feeds Renewed Hope and Divine Aegis. Spirit Tap (a non-trivial kill) doubles your Spirit for 15 sec.

Before the pull

  • Power Word: Fortitude, Inner Fire, Divine Spirit on those who'll take them.
  • Power Word: Shield on the tank, plus Renew if the fight will be long.
  • Fear Ward on the tank before any fear pull.

During the fight

  • Penance first for a spike, Heal for steady damage, Flash Heal when it can't wait.
  • Power Word: Shield on each person about to take group damage, then Prayer of Healing from 30.
  • Inner Focus into Prayer of Healing or Greater Heal (40) for a free big cast.
  • Fade or Psychic Scream if you pull aggro.
  • Cure Disease and Dispel Magic only when they matter.

Discipline as damage in a dungeon: WoW Forever DB doesn't give a damage role for Discipline. If you must fill in, the leveling toolkit above is what you have: Holy Fire, Shadow Word: Pain, Penance on an enemy, Smite and the wand.

Which dungeons: the table below. Do each once with its quests (Icy Veins).

What each level gives you

Levels 31–60 at a glance (data, not play):

  • 1–8: Power Word: Fortitude, Lesser Heal and Smite at 1, Shadow Word: Pain at 4, Power Word: Shield at 6, Renew and Fade at 8.
  • 10: Mind Blast, Resurrection, and your two racial spells. Talent points start here.
  • 12: Inner Fire. 14: Cure Disease and Psychic Scream. 16: Heal. 18: Dispel Magic.
  • 20: Flash Heal, Holy Fire, Fear Ward and Devouring Plague (rank 1: 128 Shadow damage over 24 sec, and the damage heals you), Shackle Undead and the next rank of your racials. Holy Nova (a talent) and Mind Flay (a talent) open at 20 at the earliest. 22: Mind Vision. 24: Mana Burn.
  • 28: Holy Nova rank 2, Devouring Plague rank 2 and Mind Flay rank 2.
  • 30: Prayer of Healing (rank 1: 179 to 191 to the target's party), Divine Spirit (baseline now, it was a Discipline talent in Classic), Mind Control (humanoids up to level 44) and Shadow Protection. Penance, Silence, Devouring Contagion and Spirit of Redemption open at 30 at the earliest.
  • 32: Shadow Word: Death (rank 1: 293 to 311 Shadow damage, and 10% of your max health back at you if the target survives), Abolish Disease, Binding Heal rank 2. 34: Levitate.
  • 40: Greater Heal (rank 1: 819 to 919), Penance rank 2, Prayer of Healing rank 2. Shadowform, Power Infusion and Prayer of Mending open at 40 at the earliest.
  • 48: Prayer of Fortitude. 50: Prayer of Mending rank 2, Penance rank 3, Flash Heal rank 6 and Prayer of Healing rank 3. 56: Prayer of Shadow Protection.
  • 60: Prayer of Spirit, Greater Heal rank 5, Penance rank 4, Prayer of Mending rank 3, Prayer of Healing ranks 4 and 5, Power Word: Shield rank 10, Renew rank 10, Holy Fire rank 8 and the top ranks of the rest.

Spell levels are from the client's trainer data as listed on wowforever.one's Priest spell page. "Earliest" levels are our arithmetic: a talent opens at level 10 plus the points it requires in its tree, so they only hold if every point went into that tree. Everything past level 30 is data, not play.

Race, professions and gear

  • Race: Holy and Discipline: Icy Veins picks Gnome for the Alliance (Contingency Plan and Eureka!, an 8-sec buff that Power Word: Shield benefits from), with a special mention for Human on Discipline (Divine Grace). For the Horde it picks Undead (Cannibalize and Dark Sacrifice).
  • Professions: Icy Veins lists Engineering with Mining for Gnomes, Alchemy with Herbalism, or Tailoring with Enchanting (the bind-on-pickup Tailoring items are for yourself only). Waylaid Caches sell recipes. Take First Aid.
  • Gear: Icy Veins' level 30 healer list (the only gear lists that exist; nobody has seen the 31–60 drops): random world drops with the Seer's prefix and "of the Owl", "of the Elder" or "of Healing" suffixes; Robes of Arugal and Belt of Arugal (Shadowfang Keep), the Death Speaker set (Razorfen Kraul, Jargba), Scholarly Pendant (Friend of the Library, 10 book donations), Sizzle Stick (Deviate Eradication) and, for the Horde, Dancing Flame. Tailoring's Pristine pieces are craftable for yourself. Icy Veins flags Healer's Staff as unobtainable because of a quest bug (Lost Relic Carry for the Alliance, Elder Knowledge for the Horde).

Zones, 31–60

This is Classic routing laid over Forever's zone levels, from WoW Forever DB. The new Forever zones (Riverglades, Hyjal and others) weren't playable past level 30 in the beta, so their level ranges are announced, not tested.

  • 31–40: Arathi Highlands, Stranglethorn Vale, Desolace and Alterac (30–40), then Dustwallow Marsh, Badlands and Swamp of Sorrows. Riverglades, a new contested zone, is announced for about 35–45.
  • 41–50: Tanaris, Feralas, the Hinterlands, Searing Gorge, Swamp of Sorrows and Azshara.
  • 51–60: Un'Goro Crater, Felwood, Burning Steppes, the Western and Eastern Plaguelands, Winterspring and Silithus.

Those nine are the new dungeons. The older Classic dungeons are in Forever too, and Icy Veins' dungeon overview (updated Oct 24) gives their ranges: Razorfen Downs 37–46, Scarlet Monastery Armory 36–44 and Cathedral 38–46, Uldaman 41–51, Zul'Farrak 44–54, Maraudon 46–55, Sunken Temple 50–60, Blackrock Depths 52–60, Dire Maul 54–60 (East) and 56–60 (North, West), Lower Blackrock Spire 55–60, Scholomance 58–60, Stratholme 58–60 and Upper Blackrock Spire 59–60. Other sites list slightly different ranges for the same dungeons (for example the Hall of Thanes as 13–18 versus 13–20), so treat any range as a guide. Only dungeons up to level 30 were open in the beta. Do each dungeon once with its quests in the log, since dungeon quests now carry most of the XP and spamming runs is no longer the fastest way up (Icy Veins).

Level 60 and what comes next

Launch has nine five-player dungeons and no raids. Barrow Deeps (10 players), Hyjal Summit (20) and Onyxia's Lair (40) open on December 9, and all raids are planned to reset weekly. Onyxia's Lair needs the Drakefire Amulet to enter (Blizzard's raid overview). So the first five weeks are for reaching 60, gearing from dungeons and professions, and picking your Legacy perks. At 60 your 51 talent points are all spent and builds start to differ from leveling builds, so check a PvE guide once you get there.

Legacy is Forever's new account-style perk system: challenges such as reaching level 25, 45 and 60 on a class, completing every dungeon, exploring zones or clearing raids earn Legacy Points, which you spend in the Adventure, Professions and Resourcefulness trees. Perks like Well Rested (rested XP builds 4–20% faster and caps 4–20% higher) and Talented (talent steps come up to five levels sooner, per WoW Forever DB) are worth picking early (Icy Veins Legacy guide).

What changed in recent builds

  • Oct 18 hotfix: Holy Fire rank 1 now deals 53 to 65 instead of 57 to 70 (foreverchanges.pro).
  • Oct 15 build (Blizzard): Mental Strength moved to row 2 and gives 2–10% Intellect, Improved Power Word: Shield moved to row 3, and Inner Focus affects one spell only. Devouring Plague's cooldown dropped to 24 sec (it was 1 minute). Vampiric Embrace can't be resisted and has a 30-sec cooldown. Dark Inspiration is a new Shadow talent. Devouring Contagion spreads to 2 targets, and the copy costs no mana. Shadow Word: Death's cooldown rose to 18 sec and it now benefits from Shadowform's crit bonus. Power in Light also raises Penance and Smite on a target with Holy Fire or Shadow Word: Pain, Silent Resolve's threat cut covers all spells, and Twin Disciplines also works with Shadow Word: Death, Mind Flay, Starshards and Penance. A high-rank Renew no longer stops another Priest's Renew from landing on the same target.
  • Oct 8 build: Penance was nerfed (rank 1 became 45 damage or 134 healing per volley for 150 mana, rank 4 became 92 or 425; it had been treated as a 3-sec channel instead of 2, and rank 1 costs 50% more mana), Heal heals about 8% less, Smite ranks 1–4 hit a little less, Lesser Heal ranks 2 and 3 heal about 15% more. Low-rank spells also get less spell power and proc talents less often, so downranking is weaker than in Classic.
  • Earlier: Sept 24 let Renew and Power Word: Shield crit (Shield can also replace a shield on a target without Weakened Soul). Oct 1 let Devouring Plague crit, stopped Inner Focus's crit bonus from applying to periodic effects, made Shadow Weaving always apply, and stopped Shadow Word: Death from always getting Early Demise's bonus.

Wand note: Wands no longer scale with spell power (Sept 24 notes), and since the Oct 15 build you have to stand still for half a second before a wand fires (Blizzard).

Common mistakes

  • Shielding after the damage landed. Shield first, then heal.
  • Using Inner Focus on Renew. A periodic effect can't use its crit bonus.
  • Forgetting Fear Ward lasts 3 minutes in Forever.
  • Overhealing, and not using the wand when nobody needs a heal.
  • Following a talent order from before the Oct 15 build.
  • Treating Penance's numbers as settled.

Still unclear

  • Everything from level 31 to 60 is untested, including Divine Aegis, Power Infusion and the later Penance ranks.
  • The two 10–60 orders differ on Improved Power Word: Shield, Twilight Focus, Inner Focus and Power in Light.
  • Soul Warding: WoW Forever DB says no cooldown, the talent text says 4 sec less.
  • Penance: The Penance talent text in the last client reads 42 damage or 126 healing per volley at rank 1; the Oct 8 notes list 45 and 134. Treat the exact figure as unsettled.
  • Divine Aegis and Power Infusion are unconfirmed in game (WoW Forever DB).
  • Dungeon ranges differ a little between Blizzard, Icy Veins and fan sites.
