Paladin Raid Role in WoW: Forever — What Holy, Protection & Retribution Bring to Barrow Deeps, Hyjal Summit & Onyxia, Blessings Without Salvation, Judgements, and the Nov 2 Launch Changes

Our earlier Paladin guides cover the starter basics, Retribution, Holy and Protection dungeon tanking leveling, plus level 60 gearing. This one is about raid night: what every Paladin brings, what each spec adds, how to split the jobs when you have several Paladins, and what Blizzard's final pre-launch notes changed.

Key dates (Blizzard): the game launched Nov 4, 2026. Barrow Deeps (10 players), Hyjal Summit (20 players) and Onyxia's Lair (40 players) open on Dec 9.

Read this first: the beta stopped at level 30 and had no raids. Blizzard hasn't revealed boss mechanics for Barrow Deeps or Hyjal Summit; for Onyxia it has said to expect powerful fire attacks and to build fire resistance. Numbers below come from Blizzard's Nov 2 notes and from beta client data shown on community sites. Talent builds assume 51 points at 60, which Blizzard hasn't confirmed. Nothing here has been tested at level 60 yet.

What changed on Nov 2 (official)

From Blizzard's "Beta Development Notes – Updated November 2" (posted the evening of Nov 2, Pacific). Blizzard says that apart from bugs and serious outliers, it doesn't plan big tuning changes before the raids open.

  • Righteous Fury is learned at level 10 (was 16). It raises all your threat by 33% and the threat of your Holy damage by another 90%, and it's free with the Legacy talent The Quick and the Dead.
  • Salvation, Mass Salvation, Revoke and Blessing of Light are removed. Judgement of Fury (the Seal of Fury taunt) lasts 3 seconds (was 4).
  • Holy: the tree is reshuffled. Spiritual Focus and Improved Seals take 5 points; Reverence and Divine Precision take 2; Divine Precision gives 4 and 8% Holy hit. Holy Power now raises the critical healing of your Holy spells by 10 to 50% (it no longer adds crit chance). Voice of Truth is gone; Light's Vigil works on allies only. New talents: Oath of Light and Boundless Light. Holy Conduit moves in from Retribution; Unyielding Faith moves out to it.
  • Protection: Divine Intellect moves in from Holy. Sacred Duty is on row 2 and no longer gives Stamina; Templar's Bulwark is on row 3 and can be dispelled. Improved Righteous Fury rises to 3, 6 and 9% damage reduction; Shield Specialization takes 2 points. Swift Judgement now unleashes your Seal instead of resetting Judgement. Improved Seal of Fury and One-Handed Weapon Specialization are removed; Holy Shield moves to row 5; Iron Creed takes 3 points. New talents: Stoicism and Shieldsworn (Holy Strike strikes with your shield).
  • Retribution: Sanctified Judgement and Conviction move to row 2; Conviction gives 2, 4 and 6% crit to all spells and attacks. Vindication no longer gives you attack power. Two-Handed Weapon Specialization raises Holy and Physical damage by 2 to 6% and cuts your threat with a two-hander. Champion of the Light gives spell damage equal to 12 to 60% of your Intellect. Vengeance stacks up to 5 and needs Seal of Command. Instrument of Law and Twist of Light are gone. New talents: Turn Evil and Unsealed Wrath (the 31-point talent, needs Repentance).
  • Every class: low-rank spells no longer lose proc chance (with the Mage Blizzard exception), and roots from procs now have diminishing returns.
  • Races: Human Ruthless drops to 1% crit and The Human Spirit is 10% Spirit; Dwarf gets Artisan's Precision (1% hit); Troll Berserking lasts 15 seconds; Undead Touch of the Grave has a 15-second internal cooldown.
  • Other classes that matter to you: Bear Form and Defensive Stance generate much more threat (Salvation is gone for everyone), and Moonkin Aura and Leader of the Pack give 3% to every kind of crit again but don't stack with each other.

What every Paladin brings

From the spellbook in the beta client data (wowforeverprogress), so every spec has these:

  • Greater Blessing of Kings, Might and Wisdom: +10% to all stats, +133 melee attack power, or +40 mana every 5 seconds, class-wide for 1 hour. They need Symbol of Kings. One blessing per Paladin per target, so you split by count.
  • Auras (party, 30 yards): Devotion Aura (+735 armor), Retribution Aura (20 Holy damage on hit) and Concentration Aura (35% chance to ignore spell pushback). Only one aura per Paladin.
  • Fire, Frost and Shadow Resistance Aura: +60 of that resistance to the whole raid within 30 yards. In Forever the resistance auras reach the raid, not just the party.
  • Judgements don't consume your Seal any more (10-yard range, 10-second cooldown). Judgement of Wisdom returns mana to attackers, Judgement of Light heals them, and Judgement of the Crusader raises Holy damage taken.
  • Cleanse (poison, disease and magic), Purify, Redemption, Blessing of Freedom, Blessing of Protection, Lay on Hands and Turn Undead.

What you don't bring any more: Salvation, Mass Salvation, Blessing of Light, Sanctity Aura and Blessing of Sanctuary. New baseline tools: Seal of Fury (the tank seal), Holy Strike (level 6), and Kings plus Consecration are trainable instead of talents.

What each spec adds

Holy: the tank healer. wowforeverprogress's draft melee-hybrid build is 31/5/15, with a ranged alternative at 32/11/8. Put Oath of Light on the main tank before the pull (5 minutes, only one at a time) so Holy Light, Flash of Light and Holy Shock heal more there, then use Light's Vigil + Holy Shock for a party heal before raid-wide damage. Boundless Light gives Holy Shock +30% crit on anyone without your Oath. Keep Righteous Fury off: it now raises all your threat by 33%. Holy Power makes crit heals bigger rather than more frequent, so Conviction's 6% crit (from Retribution points) matters more than it used to.

Protection: the real tank. The draft block-and-mitigation build is 0/42/9: keep Righteous Fury, Seal of Fury and Holy Shield up, Judge for the 3-second taunt, and press Holy Strike on cooldown so Shieldsworn triggers Holy Shield without spending a charge. Templar's Bulwark absorbs damage equal to your maximum health for 8 seconds, but it applies Forbearance and can now be dispelled. Improved Righteous Fury cuts damage taken by up to 9%. Expect to main-tank or off-tank Barrow Deeps (10) and Hyjal Summit (20), and to be a strong second-tank pick next to a Warrior in Onyxia's Lair (40).

Retribution: the melee and the AP cut. The draft Unsealed Wrath build is 12/8/31: Seal of Command, Holy Strike with Sacred Arbiter, and seal swaps for Unsealed Wrath's stacked procs. Vindication lowers the target's attack power by 204 (it no longer gives you AP). Two-Handed Weapon Specialization cuts your threat by 20% while you hold a two-hander — that matters more with Salvation gone. Keep Righteous Fury off.

All three drafts assume 51 points at 60. See our gearing guide for hit, crit and spell-damage priorities; the boss hit and defense caps aren't confirmed yet.

Splitting jobs with several Paladins

Based on the abilities above (our suggestion, not an official rule):

  1. Blessings by count. With one Paladin, Kings usually covers the most people. With two or three, split Kings, Might and Wisdom so melee and casters each get what they need. Nobody has Salvation or Blessing of Light to fall back on.
  1. One Fire Resistance Aura for Onyxia's Lair (and Frost or Shadow when a fight calls for it). Everyone else runs Devotion, Retribution or Concentration for their party.
  1. Judgement of Wisdom vs Judgement of Light on the boss: pick one and stick to it so two Paladins don't overwrite each other. Agree who keeps Judgement of the Crusader if the raid wants the Holy damage taken buff.
  1. Cleanse duty by group, so two people don't cleanse the same magic, poison or disease.
  1. Blessing of Freedom, Blessing of Protection and Lay on Hands assigned before the pull — Freedom for kiting or roots, BoP for Physical spikes, LoH as the last-resort full heal.
  1. No Salvation to hand out. Tanks lean on their new threat numbers (Righteous Fury, Bear Form, Defensive Stance); DPS watch a threat meter and use their own threat cuts.

Blessings and threat without Salvation

There's no Salvation in Forever any more, and Blessing of Light is gone too. That leaves Kings, Might and Wisdom as the raid blessings, plus Freedom, Protection and Sacrifice as the short ones. Prot's Righteous Fury (+33% all threat, +90% more on Holy) and the stronger Bear Form / Defensive Stance numbers are how Blizzard replaced the old threat floor. Holy and Ret should keep Righteous Fury off, take Ret's 20% two-hander threat cut if they're Ret, and open pulls carefully while the tank builds threat.

Before Dec 9

  • Get to 60, train Greater Blessings, and stock Symbol of Kings.
  • Re-check your talents: Salvation and Blessing of Light are gone, Voice of Truth / Instrument of Law / Twist of Light / Improved Seal of Fury are gone, and Oath of Light, Boundless Light, Stoicism, Shieldsworn, Turn Evil and Unsealed Wrath are new.
  • Bind Cleanse, Blessing of Freedom, Blessing of Protection and Lay on Hands where you can hit them fast; Prot also wants Judgement and Templar's Bulwark ready.
  • Plan a Fire Resistance Aura Paladin and fire-resist gear for Onyxia's Lair, and get the Drakefire Amulet to enter.
  • Holy: practice the Oath-on-tank / Vigil-before-raid-damage habit. Prot: practice the Seal of Fury Judgement taunt and Holy Strike with Shieldsworn. Ret: practice the Unsealed Wrath seal swap without running out of mana.

What's still unknown: boss mechanics, which bosses dispel Templar's Bulwark or resist Holy, the boss hit and defense caps, the debuff limit, and how Holy, Protection and Retribution compare once real logs exist. We'll update when raids open.
