This follow-up to our Paladin starter guide and the Retribution leveling post covers Protection: tanking dungeons in the beta's level 20–30 range. It's based on Wowhead's and Icy Veins' level 30 Protection guides and Blizzard's beta development notes through the October 15 build. Forever launches Nov 4, 2026. The beta is capped at level 30, so anything we say about Holy Shield or later levels comes from talent text and hasn't been tested in play.
Why Prot is worth a look in Forever
- You have a real taunt. With Seal of Fury active, Judgement taunts (Overgear says the taunt lasts four seconds). Judgement no longer consumes your Seal.
- Consecration is baseline, so you don't need to spend Holy talent points to get it (Mobalytics).
- Mana comes back while you tank. Improved Seal of Fury and Shield Specialization return mana, and since Oct 8 that returned mana doesn't generate threat (Blizzard).
- Templar's Bulwark is a new defensive spell at level 30. Wowhead calls it close to 8 seconds of immortality in dungeons, because few pulls can deal 100% of your health in that window. It shares Forbearance with Divine Shield (Wowhead abilities page).
The weak spots, per Wowhead: until level 16 you don't have Righteous Fury or Retribution Aura, so holding threat is unreliable. You also can't pull from range without special items or Engineering bombs.
Talents at level 30
Wowhead lists three routes for 21 points:
- Fully defensive (recommended for pick-up groups): Improved Seal of Fury and Shield Specialization for mana, plus Templar's Bulwark. Finish with 3 points in either One-Handed Weapon Specialization or Improved Righteous Fury. Wowhead puts One-Handed Weapon Specialization at about +1% damage per point in dungeons, and more with Reckoning.
- Mana-first: Improved Seal of Fury, Shield Specialization and Holy Conduit, so you can keep Consecration running with almost no downtime.
- Deep Retribution hybrid: Pursuit of Justice, 1 point in Vengeance, Holy Conduit and Sanctified Judgement. It's better for the open world and can still tank.
The search summary of Wowhead's defensive build lists Redoubt, Precision, Anticipation, Shield Specialization, Improved Seal of Fury, Improved Righteous Fury and Templar's Bulwark at 0/21/0. Overgear recommends 0/11/0 at level 20.
Legacy points: if you have Talented ranks from the Legacy system (Blizzard gave every beta player 16 Legacy points on Oct 8), Wowhead puts the extra points into Reckoning. Its deep-Retribution build uses them for all 3 points of Vengeance and 1 point of Champion of the Light.
The pull
Before you pull: Righteous Fury and Retribution Aura on. Icy Veins recommends Retribution Aura almost always over Devotion Aura because it scales with spell power. Blessing of Might on the party.
Single target (Wowhead):
- Seal of Fury before the pull, and keep it up
- Judgement
- Exorcism on Undead or Demons
- Holy Strike
- Consecration if your mana allows
Packs: the same, but Consecration goes second, right after Seal of Fury.
Icy Veins' main point: be conservative. Spend less mana on Consecration and save Judgement for mobs that get loose, then play more aggressively as you get comfortable.
Wowhead's tips
- Consecration's extra damage only hits the first 4 targets. More than 4 mobs is fine when you can handle it, especially with Retribution Aura and Thorns up.
- Don't use spell power weapons before level 20. Wowhead says they carry about a 25% melee damage penalty.
- Pull casters around a corner so they stack inside your Consecration.
- Use Purify on party members' poisons and diseases. Early dispels are rare.
- Salvation (level 26) fixes most remaining threat problems. Since Oct 15 it's a separate buff that no longer competes with Blessings, and you also learn Revoke to remove it (Blizzard).
Gear to look out for (Wowhead, level 30)
- Dungeons: Painwalker Buckler and Scorn's Icy Choker (Scarlet Monastery). Worgenbane Talisman and Blade of Silverlaine (Shadowfang Keep).
- Quests: Skullbreaker (An Unholy Alliance), Reedknot Ring (Jarl Needs a Blade), Oilrag Handwraps (The Lost Pages), Silvered Gauntlets (Twilight Falls).
- Crafted: Crusader's chain pieces and Sterling Silver Shoulders (Blacksmithing). A Wowhead commenter couldn't find the Crusader's Chain Helm at trainers, so it isn't confirmed.
- A commenter suggests the Stockades sword from the Debt Collector. Alliance only: the Cloak of the Divine Storm questline (it starts with the Strange Orb at the Tower of Althalaxx in Darkshore). Wowhead calls it the strongest Paladin cloak in the game.
What changed in recent builds
Oct 15 build (Blizzard):
- Consecration's spell power coefficient per tick was cut to 0.042 (was 0.095). That's the biggest change to Prot damage in this period.
- Righteous Fury's Holy threat went back to +90%. The Sept 24 build had lowered it to 60%.
- Shield Specialization now restores 4% mana (was 6%), still on a 3-sec internal cooldown.
- Reckoning is back to Classic behaviour: each trigger stores a charge (up to 4), and all of them fire on your next auto-attack.
- Seal of Fury is no longer overwritten by Power Word: Shield. Seal of Fury rank 3 now trains at 26.
- Judgement of Righteousness/Fury and Seal of Righteousness spell power coefficients were fixed.
Earlier: On Oct 8, Retribution Aura went back to its Vanilla base damage (about 33% lower) with a 6% spell power coefficient, and Reckoning got a 1.5-sec internal cooldown. On Oct 1, Redoubt's block chance became 4–20% (was 6–30%) and Holy Shield's block chance went up to 30%. On Sept 24, Holy Strike's weapon damage per rank was raised.
Still unclear
- How much the Oct 15 Consecration cut changes pack threat. None of the guides we read has been re-tested since.
- Holy Shield. Mobalytics lists it at level 40. Its tooltip and the Oct 1 change are all anyone has seen, because nobody can test it yet.
- Reckoning in play. A Wowhead commenter reported it misbehaving before the Oct 15 rework. We haven't seen results since the rework.
- Overgear's race advice. It names Human as the best Alliance pick and Undead as the only Horde option. We haven't checked that against the final race/class list.
