Hunter Raid Role in WoW: Forever — What BM, MM & Survival Bring to Barrow Deeps, Hyjal Summit & Onyxia, Hunter's Mark, Trueshot Aura, Traps, and the Nov 2 Launch Changes

Our earlier Hunter guides cover the starter basics, pet families, Beast Mastery, Marksmanship and Survival leveling, plus level 60 gearing. This one is about raid night: what any Hunter brings to a raid, what each spec adds, how to split the jobs when you have several Hunters, and what Blizzard's final pre-launch notes changed.

Key dates (Blizzard): launch is today, Nov 4, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. PST. Barrow Deeps (10 players), Hyjal Summit (20 players) and Onyxia's Lair (40 players) open on Dec 9.

Read this first: the beta stopped at level 30 and had no raids. Blizzard hasn't revealed boss mechanics for Barrow Deeps or Hyjal Summit; for Onyxia it has said to expect powerful fire attacks and to build fire resistance. Numbers below come from Blizzard's Nov 2 notes and from beta client data shown on community sites (build 1.60.1.70755 per Endgame Tools). Nothing here has been tested at level 60 yet.

What changed on Nov 2 (official)

From Blizzard's "Beta Development Notes – Updated November 2" (posted the evening of Nov 2, Pacific). Blizzard says that apart from bugs and serious outliers, it doesn't plan big tuning changes before the raids open.

  • All traps now share one 30-second cooldown. Fire and Frost traps used to be separate. In a raid this means an Explosive Trap on trash can leave you without a Freezing Trap when the raid leader calls for CC.
  • Aimed Shot deals about 110% more bonus damage, and Arcane Shot about 30% more, with a larger attack power share (0.15, was 0.1).
  • Serpent Sting deals about 20% more, and each tick takes 5% of your attack power (was 3%).
  • Aspect of the Hawk gives 20, 35, 50, 70, 90 and 110 ranged attack power for ranks 1 to 6. (Client data on wowforeverprogress also lists a rank 7 at 120 for level 60; treat that as unconfirmed.)
  • Hunter's Mark can no longer stack from different ranks, and rank 4 no longer gives less than rank 3.
  • Pets keep their innate attack speed passives when you untrain them.
  • Marksmanship: Barrage rises to 5, 10 and 15%, Sniper Shot deals 100% more bonus damage, and Trueshot Aura gives 20, 35, 50, 75 and 100 ranged attack power per rank.
  • Survival: Lightning Reflexes gives 3 to 15% Agility, and Lacerating Strikes always replaces your own earlier one.
  • Beast Mastery: Pathfinding moves to row 3.
  • Every class: roots from procs now have diminishing returns, which includes the Hunter's Entrapment, Improved Wing Clip and Counterattack.
  • Races: Orc loses Savage and gets Command back (Hunter and Warlock pets deal 5% more), and Blood Fury drops to a 2-minute cooldown. Dwarf gets Artisan's Precision (1% hit), Human Ruthless drops to 1% crit, Troll Berserking lasts 15 seconds, Skyborne Wind Blessed is 2% haste, and Tauren Endurance is just 5% health.
  • Other classes that matter to you: Paladin Salvation is removed, and Bear Form and Defensive Stance generate much more threat. Leader of the Pack and Moonkin Aura give every kind of crit again but don't stack with each other.

What every Hunter brings

These come from the spellbook in the beta client data, so every spec has them:

  • Hunter's Mark: +143 ranged attack power at rank 4 for everyone attacking the target, for 2 minutes. Only one Mark matters per target, so agree on who applies it.
  • Aspect of the Wild: +60 Nature resistance for the raid within 30 yards. You give up Aspect of the Hawk while it's up, so only run it when the raid leader asks.
  • Tranquilizing Shot (level 60): removes one Frenzy effect from an enemy, 20-second cooldown. We don't yet know which Forever bosses Frenzy.
  • Freezing Trap for crowd control, and Scare Beast for beasts. Remember the shared trap cooldown.
  • Enchanted Flare (new in Forever, level 32): reveals hidden and invisible enemies and "staves off magical darkness" for 30 seconds. Nobody knows yet which encounter that darkness belongs to, but it's worth a keybind.
  • Scorpid Sting: the target's chance to hit drops by 2%. Each Hunter can keep only one sting on a target, so it replaces your own Serpent Sting. One Hunter on Scorpid (or a Balance Druid's Insect Swarm, which does the same) is usually enough.
  • Pet utility: a Wolf's Furious Howl gives +83 melee attack power within 15 yards for 1 minute (Blizzard cut it by 40% in the beta), a Carrion Bird's Demoralizing Screech lowers enemy melee attack power, and the new Tallstrider Dust Cloud lowers armor by 505. Whether Dust Cloud stacks with Sunder Armor is unknown.

There's no Misdirection in Forever, and with Salvation gone you can't lean on a Paladin either. Your threat tools are Feign Death (30-second cooldown) and Disengage. Watch a threat meter, especially early in a pull while the tank builds threat.

What each spec adds

Marksmanship: the Trueshot Aura Hunter. Trueshot Aura has been raid-wide since the Oct 16 beta build and now gives 100 ranged attack power at rank 5. Because it's raid-wide, one Hunter per raid is enough, and that's usually the MM Hunter. wowforeverprogress's draft MM raid guide builds around Lone Wolf (20% more damage with no active pet) plus the stronger Aimed Shot and Sniper Shot. If you play Lone Wolf, your pet's utility (Furious Howl, Dust Cloud) goes with it, so another Hunter should cover that.

Beast Mastery: the pet Hunter. BM's damage comes from the pet and up to two hawks from Summon Hawk, with Bestial Wrath (+50% pet damage for 18 seconds, 2-minute cooldown). Orc's returning Command adds 5% pet damage, and Blood Fury's new 2-minute cooldown lines up with Bestial Wrath. Keep the pet alive through raid damage: if it dies, you lose most of your damage and Focused Fire's 2% bonus. wowforeverprogress's draft BM build (35/16/0) only takes Trueshot Aura if nobody else does.

Survival: the melee-and-traps Hunter. Survival plays in melee range with Mongoose Bite, Lacerating Strikes and Strider Kick, and Lightning Reflexes now gives up to 15% Agility. In a raid that means standing with the melee, where a Wolf's Furious Howl helps the most, and taking melee-range boss damage. Trap control is still yours, but now on one shared cooldown.

Splitting jobs with several Hunters

Based on the abilities above (our suggestion, not an official rule):

  1. One Hunter on Trueshot Aura, usually MM. Everyone else spends that talent point elsewhere.
  1. One Hunter on Hunter's Mark on the boss. Two Hunters marking the same target don't add anything.
  1. One Hunter on Scorpid Sting if no Balance Druid has Insect Swarm up.
  1. One Wolf near the melee for Furious Howl, if the raid leader wants it.
  1. Tranquilizing Shot rotation of two Hunters on bosses that Frenzy, so a cooldown or death doesn't wipe the raid.
  1. Trap duty: name who traps on trash so nobody wastes the shared cooldown on an Explosive Trap.
  1. Aspect of the Wild only on Nature-heavy fights, and only from one Hunter.

Onyxia and fire resistance

Blizzard's raid overview says to expect powerful fire attacks in Onyxia's Lair, and you'll need the Drakefire Amulet to enter. Pets have their own Fire Resistance passive (up to +120 at rank 4 in the client data), so train it before Onyxia. Hunters have no fire resistance aura of their own, so ask your Paladins or Shamans what they're bringing.

Before Dec 9

  • Get to 60 and grab Tranquilizing Shot from your trainer.
  • Train your pet's Fire Resistance and Great Stamina, and pick a raid pet (a Wolf if your group wants Furious Howl).
  • Make a threat meter part of your UI, and bind Feign Death where you can hit it fast.
  • Re-check your talents: the Nov 2 notes changed Barrage, Sniper Shot, Trueshot Aura, Lightning Reflexes and Pathfinding.
  • See our gearing guide for stats. Note that sites disagree on the boss hit cap (our earlier post used 8%; Warcraft Tavern, as quoted by wowforeverprogress, says 9%), and Blizzard hasn't confirmed either.

What's still unknown: boss mechanics, which bosses Frenzy or are stun immune, the debuff limit, and how the BM, MM and Survival damage compares once real logs exist. We'll update when raids open.
