This follow-up to our Warrior starter guide and the Arms leveling post covers Protection: tanking dungeons in the level 20–30 range. It's based on Wowhead's and Icy Veins' level 30 Protection guides, wowforevertierlist's Warrior dungeon guide and Blizzard's beta development notes through the October 15 build, plus the hotfixes since. Blizzard closed the beta at 10:00 AM PDT today (Oct 23). Character creation opens Oct 27 and Forever launches Nov 4, 2026. The beta was capped at level 30, so anything about Shield Slam or later levels comes from talent text and hasn't been tested in play.
Why Prot is worth a look in Forever
- Your Rage comes from blocks, dodges and parries now. At 5/5, Shield Specialization gives 5 Rage per block, and Master of Defense gives 5 Rage per dodge or parry while you have a shield equipped (wowforever.be, Icy Veins). Wowhead says Shield Specialization makes Shield Block "rage-neutral" if both of its charges get used.
- You can Charge straight into Defensive Stance. That's the new Vanguard talent, so you no longer open in Battle Stance and swap.
- Thunder Clap works in Defensive Stance and scales with Attack Power. Wowhead also says Revenge scales with Attack Power.
- You have more interrupts and stuns than any other tank: Shield Bash, Concussion Blow and Challenging Shout (wowforevertierlist).
The weak spots: Wowhead points out that Prot Warrior is the only tank without a Thorns-type effect. Those effects do a lot of a tank's damage, so invite a Druid or Paladin if you can. wowforevertierlist says to expect to hold 3–4 enemies, not a Classic-style mega-pull, partly because Blizzard deliberately reduced Thunder Clap's threat.
Talents at level 30
All three guides share this core:
- Shield Specialization 5/5
- Improved Revenge 3/3: +60% Revenge damage, so more threat
- Master of Defense 2/2
- Defiance 3/3: +15% threat in Defensive Stance with a shield
- Vanguard 1/1
After the core, they differ:
- wowforever.be (21 points): adds Anticipation 5/5 (+20 Defense Skill), Last Stand 1/1 (+30% max health for 20 seconds) and Concussion Blow 1/1. With Legacy's Talented (+5 points), add Improved Bloodrage 2/2 and Focused Rage 3/3 (your attacks cost 3 less Rage).
- Wowhead takes Improved Thunder Clap and Improved Rend ("tab-Rend" beats Cleave). Its flex options are Cruelty, Deflection, or 2 Improved Sunder plus 1 Focused Rage.
- Icy Veins puts the third point of Improved Thunder Clap after Master of Defense, then adds Improved Bloodrage, Improved Rend and Cruelty. With Talented, add 3 more Cruelty, Last Stand and a flex point.
Stances
- Defensive Stance, from the level 10 quest, gives +30% threat and makes you take and deal 10% less damage (Icy Veins).
- Swapping stance costs you Rage. Tactical Mastery lets you keep 10. Wowhead lists it as baseline, and Icy Veins says you get it at 14.
- Berserker Stance comes from the level 30 class quest "The Islander". Wowhead notes the quest's Big Will fight is level 33. The stance gives +3% crit, but you take 10% more damage. Icy Veins says to use it only for Intercept.
The pull
Single target (Wowhead): Charge, Bloodrage, Shield Block, Revenge, Thunder Clap, Demoralizing Shout, then Sunder Armor up to 5 stacks on bosses. Add Rend if you have the threat to spare. Once Sunder is at 5 stacks, put spare Rage into Heroic Strike.
Packs: Mark a kill target first, because you have no crowd control of your own. Then Charge with Vanguard and Thunder Clap immediately (keep it off anything your group has crowd-controlled). Follow with Bloodrage, Shield Block, Revenge on every proc, Demoralizing Shout and Rend on different targets, and put spare Rage into Cleave.
Icy Veins says to swap targets every few seconds and put one or two abilities on each. Shield Bash the casters, and Challenging Shout when the healer gets swarmed.
Cooldowns:
- Shield Wall (level 28): 60% less damage for 12 seconds on a 15-minute cooldown (Icy Veins).
- Last Stand (talent).
- Retaliation (level 20, Battle Stance) for big packs.
Tips from the guides
- Shield Block is the most reliable way to proc Revenge. Icy Veins says it gives +75% block chance, and two blocks refund its cost.
- Some of Wowhead's guide is outdated. It still says Demoralizing Shout has no threat and that tab-Sundering isn't worth it. Since then, Blizzard fixed Sunder's threat on Sept 24 and Demoralizing Shout's on Oct 8, and a Wowhead commenter points this out. The same commenter opens with Bloodrage, pre-casts Shield Block, then Charges.
- Don't trust older race write-ups. Icy Veins recommends Night Elf or Orc, but its Orc reasoning is from before the Oct 15 build. That build replaced Axe Specialization with Savage (+1% crit) and changed Shatter Curse.
Gear to look out for (Wowhead, level 30)
- Dungeons: Pronged Reaver (Razorfen Kraul), Jimmied Handcuffs (Stockade), Thermaplugg Medal of Honor and Electrocutioner Leg (Gnomeregan), Treacherous Treads (Blackfathom Deeps).
- Synergy with Shield Block: Bandsaw Wristbands and Iron Shield Spike.
- Crafted: Officer's Belt, the Veteran's Silvered Chain pieces and Cloudy Skyforged Pauldrons (Blacksmithing), Barbaric Bracers (Leatherworking), Minor Recombobulator (Engineering).
- Class quest: Brutal Hauberk (Horde) or Fire Hardened Hauberk (Alliance), from level 20.
What changed in recent builds
Oct 15 build (70425): Battle Shout now affects your whole raid. Weaponmaster Sword Specialization no longer procs from Shield Bash or Shield Slam, and Improved Berserker Rage removes snares. Human Ruthless (+2% crit) replaces Sword Specialization, and Orc Savage (+1% crit) replaces Axe Specialization.
Since then: On Oct 16 (build 70450), Blood Craze stopped generating threat. Oct 18–23 brought hotfixes for Priest, Mage, Hunter, Shaman and Paladin, with no Warrior changes. The Oct 22 build has the same game data as Oct 16 (foreverchanges.pro, Bind on Forever).
Earlier:
- Oct 8, the big one for tanks: Rage from taking damage is now based on an expected creature's health instead of yours. It counts crits and crushing blows, ignores absorbs, and is tuned for 20–40% armour (it used to be 50%). Blizzard says the typical Warrior "should be gaining more Rage from taking damage".
- Also Oct 8: Demoralizing Shout now generates threat, and a Last Stand health bug was fixed.
- Oct 1–2: Basic attacks that crit give 100% more Rage, and Rend and Sunder now tap a mob instantly.
- Sept 24: Sunder threat fixed on all ranks.
Still unclear
- Can you Charge in combat with Vanguard? Wowhead says yes, but Icy Veins says you "still can not Charge in combat", and wowforevertierlist says the talent text doesn't mention combat. Plan on it as an opener only.
- How much Rage you'll really get after Oct 8. wowforevertierlist says nobody has properly retested it.
- Known beta issues (Blizzard, Oct 1; wowforevertierlist): mobs can parry and block from behind if you stand too close. Testers also report that queuing Heroic Strike or Cleave turns off the spell-queue window.
- Shield Slam is the level 40 capstone. In Forever it can also dispel a Magic effect half of the time (wowforever.be). It's untested.
